Timing is everything…..

I get to the farm just after first light, with the wind coming out of the N.W. this morning I thought it best to walk around the back end of the farm to avoid being winded. I walked the 500 yds or so and setup my decoy/e-caller and began with dying rabbit using my hand calls. This end of the farm has only a small bush (5 arces or so) the bigger bush (50 acres or so) is about 600 yds away. Since I was walking in from the back portion of the farm I thought I call this little bush just in case something was between it and the bigger bush. I called for 10 mins or so nothing showed up so I left making my way to the bigger bush. As I get about 150 yds from my setup I notice 2 coyotes crossing an open field in the distance making their way to this bigger bush. I race to my setup and as I reach it I get busted by them, off they go… If I was there 1 minute earlier I had a real good chance at them. Since the wind was in my favour I decide to call anyway hoping to make one or both of them mad and come in for a look. I just need them to stick their head out for a quick look my way as I am about 175 yds from the bush. I throw a bunch of sounds at them. I hear one in the distance bark back. I try coyote challenge, pup distress, coyote fighting etc… for about 15 mins with no action I decide to stay quiet and hope curiosity gets the better of them. I sit there in silence for 15 mins before I notice something move at the edge of the bush but by the time I raise my gun it’s out of site. I try again pup distress, coyote challenge but nothing more sticks their head out for a look. I guess I had my chance but no dice, not to be…..I decide to call it a day and make my way back to the truck. As I begin to cross the final field before reaching my truck I notice a coyote mousing along the edge of the far end of the field. I quickly get down, watch the wind and let the coyote continue along the edge until he gets behind the bush. Once behind this small bush I drop my gear and run to an opening the farmer uses to get to the back field. I find a good vantage point, stand behind a tree so it hides me and to use it as a shooting support. I get one of my hand calls out and scream out for about 30 seconds, nothing happens, don’t see him anywhere. I wait a minute get onto my mouth/hand squeaker call and call out with that one for about 30 seconds. I see him emerge from behind the bush (150yds out). I call again with my hand/mouth squeaker call and here he comes. I was getting real worried he was going to get my scent as he just kept coming in, I had to wolf him 3 times before he stopped for the shot. Timing truly is everything when it comes to hunting….

Enjoy the pics….

Thanks for sharing.
I wonder in that other guy AJH is letting them breed this year or ran out of ammo, either way

I try, but I just don't get it. How to kill an animal, not for food, or need, just to kill it? I guess I need to wait until it kills something I love or invades some space I own. But, still, I still find it hard to kill something so closely related to my dogs, whom I I love. & Wolves too, it's ok as a hunter to kill them? I don't have an issue shooting ducks & Fowl,(never have, but soon, & dont have an issue) but killing a Wolf, or even Coyote. I know there is something I'm missing here, When I think of Coyotes, I know they are labeled as Pest. I'm not anti-hunting, I just am not at the place to kill a Wolf or Coyote.. At this time. Coyote may deserve it more.(Pest/Kill out livestock/dogs?)But still, it's their land, as I see it.. ..how long have they lived on the land..(b4 us?).. ... I guess if we didn't Kill them, they would breed & too many of them would be alive..? Is that why we should kill these animals now as a sport?

Johnyy, I too feel bad for every animal I kill, but an animal has to die if I am going to eat meat or control the wildlife in my area. As for coyotes, I don't make up the rules/laws I just try and follow them. Coyotes are open year round down here in my part of the province. Why is coyote open year round? I can only assume the individuals that make up the laws (MNR-Biologists) believe it needs to be done, and its not that I just shoot them and leave them. i try to utilize most of the coyote. The hides get skinned out, some get sold or tanned, some get donated to the aboriginal course at work. The claws and the occasional tooth are used by the students to make bracelets or necklaces. The skulls get cleaned/cured, some given back to the farmers so they can put them on display, some get donated to the aboriginal class and some I just keep for myself. So you see the coyote is not wasted its just used differently than other game. Coyote hunting or any type of hunting for that matter isn't for everyone. I always have mixed feelings when I kill any game but I understand as a hunter I must do my part to manage the wildlife in my area.

Johnyy: I don't understand why people collect 3000 dollar black guns and have all the picatinny doodads, but that's their thing. I hunt deer and elk, so I hunt wolves and coyotes. If you want to see the "Why' of it, check out "Why Hunt Wolves?" on wolftracker.ca
