Sang to the tune of that old John Dever song, "Sunshine On My Shoulders Makes Me Happy".

Seeing as how the Government aleady knows where the formerly Restricted now Prohib rifles are located, I reckon there is miminal harm in giving them a little loving air time outside of the safe. Hopefully this will be the start of a thread allowing those of us with 2-year (+) safe-queens to show them a little love, and at the same time show some of the rest of us those fine builds from the recent past.

Here are some of mine to start us off. First up are a couple of classic Colt USA AR15 SP1s - On top is a genuine SP1 Carbine converted to GAU-5/A/A/ "Son Tay Raider" specs, and below is an SP1 converted to Colt 601 specs and equipped with a UK Ring Sight circa 1973:

Next up are a couple of Colt Canada C8 rifles set up as clones of the service carbines that I carried in Afghanistan in 2002 and 2008 respectively. On top is an unfired C8 circa Op APOLLO 2002 and below is an SA 15.7 configured as my Operational Mentoring and Liaison Team C8 Flat-Top Heavy Barrel.

Our 3rd pair are a couple of shorties. On top is an Aero Precision-based carbine with a Maxim Defense Buttstock system in .300 Blk. Below that is a Leitner-Wise Rifle Company M6 IC Carbine in 5.56mm

Next up are a mismatched pair consisting of a 14" HK MR 223 A3 (HK 416A5) on top, and a .308 cal Colt USA LE 901 (C20 Sniper Rifle basis) on the bottom

Finally (for now) we have a stand-alone SIG MCX Lightweight Carbine in 5.56 mm, Enjoy!

I'll play... C8 surplus parts kit on a psa M4 receiver. Put her together a week before the oic and never got to shoot her.

That's a nice looking C8! You must have scored one of the better kits from Nordic Marksman when he brought in those chopped up LE carbines. I managed to score an unfired Upper, which I mated to a stripped Colt Canada/Diemaco Lower Receiver to complete the circa 2002 package. Those "surplus" C8 kits were an awesome score, as were the Dutch and SAS Contract over-runs! Ah, to be back in the day...

Nice collection. Bartok. Hopefully sooner than later we will be able to use these again. My question to you is if you could choose just 1 which would it be and why?

Great question, and a tough one! At first blush, I want to say the Colt Canada SA 15.7 / C8 FTHB configured as my service carbine from my 2008 tour because that is a rifle that I trust with my life and have the most muscle memory on. That said, it is not 100% ideal as configured from 14 years ago. LVPOs weren't yet a "thing" - you could say that I was pre-early adopter - and the 1-4x magnification range of the Trijicon LVPO is too limited by modern 1-10x standards. Upgrade the optic though, and it is a superb choice for just about any tactical task.

Next in terms of obvious choices would be the HK MR223A3 / HK 416A5 given the rifle's superb track record with Special Operations Forces and various foreign militaries (eg. USMC, France). Same muscle memory as the C8, but with the added reliability (and weight) of a short-stroke piston operating system. But nope.

My 5.56mm choice would actually be the SIG MCX. I am a huge fan of this particular carbine's light pencil-Barrel weight, reliability and accuracy. Durability is assured with replaceable steel wear inserts at all critical wear points on the Upper Receiver. Muscle memory is directly transferrable from the Colt Canada SA 15.7. The folding and retracting Buttstock is excellent. The SIG MCX definitely ticks all of the boxes for a favourite in class, but.....

BUT, my actual 1st choice wouldn't be a 5.56mm rifle/carbine at all. My 1st choice of all of the listed firearms would be the Colt LE 901 chambered in .308 / 7.62x51mm NATO. This rifle does everything that I need it to do out to 800m, delivering reliable, hard-hitting effects on target with consistent sub-MOA accuracy. There were very sound reasons for selecting the LE 901 as the basis for the new Canadian C20 Sniper Rifle. But I digress. Equipped with the Eotech Vudu 1-10x LPVO, I can dial down the magnification to provide me with near-Red Dot performance at CQB distances, or dial it up to reveal a precison "Christmas Tree" reticle excellent for longer range engagements. This revolutionary optic and its "evolving reticle" give new meaning to the optic lending multi-range capability to the carbine! Moving along, the LAW Tactical Folding Busttock Adapter provides better versatility than the collapsing Buttstocks of the AR carbines, as it makes for s smaller overall package. This set-up mimics the versatility of the SIG MCX Buttstock, albeit without the ability to be fired when folded. The LE 901 is an amazing rifle with superb inherent accuracy that I just have to keep circling back to. You have to bang steel with it at 500 yds first round, every shot, to fully understand just how good this rack-grade, free-floated Colt USA barrel is. Chrome-lined with a 1-12 twist, it produces incredibly consistent results with 175 gr Federal Gold Medal Match. So that's it - that's my first choice.

Long-winded? Perhaps, but I had a few minutes available to ponder the question and share my thought process. Besides, you asked!

I ran a Redi-Mag system on both tours. Excellent system for actual combat, largely overlooked in the race for higher-capacity magazines....

I love Redi-Mags. I agree with you.

Here's another slightly off topic question. Was Para Ordinance offering 1911 tour guns on your rotos and did you buy one? I have a TF 1-08 here which is the favorite gun in my collection.

what a shame, and the irony of going to serve your county and then ending up having your country treat you like you can't be trusted. Bloody shame. thanks for sharing. Beautiful rifles.

Yes, I have a single-stack M1911A1 in FDE with the "2 PPCLI BG" marking. I went with that one, as my small unit (the Operational Mentoring and Liaison Team) was attached to the Battlegroup in Panjway and Zhari Districts for most of the tour. It is actually a very good shooting pistol, almost on par with my STI Single-Stack Tactical M1911A1...

Weird double picture.
CC IUR built with 100%CC components, Magpul furniture. Unfired.
Other two are mix n match DMR and what was gonna end up a C8clone.

That's cool. I always had an interest in these guns. I started my own thread in the pistols section as to not derail yours. Thanks for sharing your builds. Love seeing them.
