Just got back from Edmonton tonight, got a buch of reloading stuff and picked up a SKS from Grizz (Thanks again). This thing is a mess! LOL. The barrel and Barrel adapter were loose, move in my hands loose. My go/no go gauges were going and gone in this rifle. I pressed the entire rifle together with about 400 lbs, this allowed me to properly check the head space, it checked out great!. I didn't get a shot of the rifle before I pressed it but you could see daylight betreen the reciever and the op rod housing, had to be 1/16" slop in the whole thing. I Vee'd the barrel to adapter and adapter to reciever and proceeded to weld the damn thing in place. This is a spray and pray toy for the girlfriend, as long as it is safe, accuracy isn't paramount.

Can't believe Lever would sell this crap. I have an actual Chinese SKS with a pinned barrel, it is a piece of art compared to this one!

Reciever end.

Wasn't going for pretty!

Let you guys know how it shoots after tomorrow, got to be better than what it was, head space is good and there is lots of weld there. Should be good enough to chuck Czech surplus 50 yards!

My gods what a mess.
Unbelievable that a store would let such a sloppy barrel out like that.

I seriously doubt that this is something that a Chinese Military Armourer would let out the door...they prob' would have shot him with the same rifle if he did.

Hope she's safe.

I'm disappointed. I thought this thread was going to be about a lever-action SKS.

That would have been a "Super Bubba." :)

Looks like it should work. Gonna test it with a string on the trigger?;)

Good enough to sell to us Western fascists, I suppose :)

Good work Holleyman. I had one like that but I didn't try to fix it, I returned it.. I had the same prob. with the op rod spring visible thru the housing meaning too much headspace. It wouldn't shoot without lots of FTF and when it did I had to pound open the bolt. It will be interesting to see how it shoots after your repair

Am I the only one a little nervous about a welded in barrel? I don't know how deep the "V"s were for the welds, and I don't know how thick the untouched barrel wall was under the "V"s. What effect would the undercutting and welding have on the ability of the chamber area to contain the hoop stress from discharge?

Time will tell.

120 rounds, no failures to feed, no misfires, cases look good and it actually grouped 3.3" at 50 yards from a rest. Not too bad. There is no signs of any cracking in the welds... all in all a pretty cheap bullet dispenser that is a load of fun. I hope it lasts a full crate, we'll see. Worse comes to worst, I can get another barreled action for cheap and swap the parts or buy another SKS and have a lot of spare parts.

Thought it was kind of weird the the Norinco barrel seems to be a couple inches shorter than the Chinese military version. The bayonet doesn't swap over to the Norc, too long.

Better check the barrel length from the breech face to the muzzle. If its less than 18 1/2", there's a problem. The front sight base/bayonet mount does look closer to the gas block than on a standard SKS.

That is the one-off Norc abortion way of attaching a pinned barrel to a threaded receiver. Pinning the barrel to the threaded collet didn't seem to be too durable and several barrels have actually shot off these rifles. Lever was repairing them for free, sticking an extra over sized pin through the whole mess.....seemed to hold up as there were no more similar problems report after.

Another 180 rounds today and still holding. This actually shoots not too bad (after I raised the front sight pin up about a 1/4") I shot a 3" - 6 shot group at 100 with it. It does have a feed problem with the mag that I have to "tweak". Other than that I think it is ready for the girlfriend to abuse!

Ok, mag rework finished and working great. Front sight tuned in good. Over 400 rounds and the barrel is perfect. I can't believe the accuracy of this thing, I was expecting crap but I set the sight to 500 and can slam the gong at 500 - 5 out of 5 times from a rest. Blew everyone at the range away today.

This is a 100 yard 6 shot shooting seated but no rest. Just under 4 inch.
