Ok so I was given a large quantity of VERY tarnished brass.

I mean GREEN tarnished brass............

But with reloading costs the way they are I would like to save them if possible.

I tumbled them with corn cob and took off much of the rough stuff but they are still very much off colour......ok black.

I put in some ONE SHOT while tumbling but the results are not spectacular.

I was sure I read somewhere about various home remedies but I will be damned if I know what to even search under.

Anyone got a super sure solution?

The brasso cleaned my cartridges pretty darn well, I use a blend of corn cob and walnut (lizard litter from the pet store)

Any chance you're shooting Sharon or Barrie this month? I've got a large amount of crushed walnut. If the walnut won't remove the crud and crap, leaving a decent, non-pitted surface underneath, then chuck the brass.

Brasso may help bring up the shine later, but you need to get the verdegris off first to see if the brass is worth the effort. Cases that still have a smooth finish but look a little brown may be worth keeping.

I did the 50% vinegar 50% hot water in a zip lock bag. was on some range pickup .223 brass awhile ago, worked really well, got rid of the dark tarnish and cleaned up the outsides to an even coloration. Cheap and easy.

I use NEVR-DULL polishing cotton/cloth with a sinclair shell holder/drill adapter. I hold the cotton around the brass while the brass is spinning in the drill/shell holder. I guarrantee there is nothing that will polish a brass to this brilliance, although it is definately slower and more labour intensive than tumbling. The brass comes out so smooth its actually hard to hang on to. You can pick up a tin of NEVR-DULL at many auto parts stores for about $15 and it will polish 1000's of brass. I must say that the shell holder is equally important as the NEVR-DULL for this to work quickly.

Do the Brasso thing in crushed walnut Stormy. I've used it and it works well. Don't put too much in though.

Start everything tumbling, then add about a teaspoon at a time until the circulation of the media starts to slow down. Spread it out as you're adding it by drizzling it in. You'll probably have to add 2-3 oz to a full load of media in say a turbo 1200 sized pot. If you add too much, the media won't circulate properly and things will just stall to a stop. Just add slowly, and you'll see what I mean by the media circulation slowing down.

Brass

I've used crushed walnut shells with Flitz metal polish. It works good, but make sure you get all the other stuff off it first.

I would say that if the first tumbling didn't remove the corrosion then chuck the brass. It's not worth a rifle, or your safety to use brass that may have weak spots.
