In hindsight I see that if I had been doing this a little longer I should have know better but I think this case shows confusing/poor marketing on Hornady part.

To start, the weather is finally getting nice in MB and I'm going to get some range time in, so I want to work up a load using Superformance powder. So I collect the part that I will need some Hornady bullets, Superformance powder and the Hornady reloading book the 8th edition that says its includes data for superformance powder.

Now on Hornady's web sight it shows that their loaded Superformance ammo goes pretty fast and I would like those results, so I got all the parts I thought I would need.

Looking in the Hornady manual I saw there was no reference to using superformance powder (for barley any caliber) for my 7mm RM.

Called Hornady and asked, I was told they use 32 different powders in their superformance line of loaded ammunition and what Hodgdon released was only to be used with the 5 or 6 calibers, hodgdon released data for (also in the Hornady manual). The guy on the phone did say he wished they would make it clear that it was not superformance powder used in all there loaded superformance line of ammo to achieve those speed. The Hornady tech said he wished that one super powder would do it all but this is not the case and that the Superformance powder in a 7mmRM would be awful.

So I should have know that there is no one powder that can do everything and I now have to buy a new gun caliber to match the 1lb of powder I already have. :D
 
Cannister Superformance has an estimated burn rate in the H4831/H1000 burn range.

At least that is what I found. I think it would be a wonderful powder in a number of cartridges.

I think it would be a very nice option in a 7mm short magnum. At least worth trying.

These powders seem to burn dirty so cleaning more often may be needed.

Hopefully, that means they also burn cooler and may help bores last longer??????

Right now they have data out for at least 7 different cartridges. 22-250, 243, 6mm, 243 WSSM, 25 WSSM, 300 WSM and 300 RCM. They advertise it as having limited applications but where it work it works very well. I have a little more load develpment left to do with my Cooper 6mm and 69gr Bergers but the first couple targets I shot have a 3 shot .5" gruop with 2 shots almost in the same hole.
 
"...no one powder that can do everything..." Nope, but there are several that are extremely versatile. You don't need Hornady bullets. Load for the bullet weight. Who made it doesn't matter. Velocity won't matter if the accuracy out of your rifle isn't there either.
Hornady 154 grain SST 7mm Mag Superperformance ammo is only 62 fps faster than a regular 154 grain SST. Not enough difference to matter. Certainly not worth the $3.50 price difference either. They're max loads too.
"...no reference to using superformance powder..." Too new. IMR 7828 gives 2952 fps at max loads. Like Mystic Precision says, H4831 or H1000 will give you those velocities with a 150. So will Hybrid 100V. All at the Max load.
