Superformance powder

I did a internet search to try find out if the Superformance powder is the same powder that Hornady uses in their Superformcne factory ammunition and it seems that the factory loaded ammo from Hornady does not have the Superformance powder that we can buy for reloading. I don't know why Hornady made this so confusing but it seems they don't want us to get our hands on the stuff they use for their Superformance factory loads.

I've used in in the 7X57 with a 175 bullet, and found that in the 7X57 its burn rate is between Re19 and Re22, and slightly faster than H4831.

I recently tried it in the 8X57 with a 218 gr bullet and found it to be slightly faster than H4831SC as well:

Prvi brass
218 gr FMJ (pulled from 8X63mm Swedish ammo)
CCI standard primer
3.250" OAL
24" barrel Mauser
5 degrees C

H4831SC

57.0 grs (compressed) - 2325 fps

Superformance

56.0 grs - 2400 fps
57.0 grs - 2425 fps
58.0 grs - 2475 fps
59.0 grs (full) - 2500 fps
60.0 grs (compressed) - 2525 fps

This is the only spherical powder with a burn rate a bit faster than the 4831's (H414 is quite a bit faster) and so can be quite useful, as it's about 5% more dense. So if you're close, but run out of space with 4831, it's an alternative if max velocity at safe pressure is your objective.

The list of spherical powders slower than the 4831's is quite short as well:

- W-780;
- PP 4000-MR;
- AA-8700; and
- US-869.

I need to get me some W-780 as it's rumoured to be about the same burn rate as the 4831's.

Because they use a blend of powders in factory loads. Every load is a different blend. They would have to put out a new powder for everything. One for 223 a new powder for 30-06 and so on

I have been trying SP in my 280 rem worked out well so far I was able to shrink the group in this picture to 3/4" by adjusting the OAL

120 TSX 59.2 SP

I tried it in 30-06; got decent speeds with 180s.

This!! I developed a load with the 180 Partition in my 30-06 that delivered very good velocities, and was as good, accuracy wise, as any other 180 load in this rifle.

I will try it in my 7x57 with the 160 next. Regards, Dave.

Cleftwynd, you quoted me from a post of March, 2014.
At that time it was not on Hodgdon's charts.
I have since used the powder on two or three different calibres and have loading rates figured out for very good performance, including in the 243.
