supreme-court-affirms-american-indigenous-mans-right-to-hunt-in-canada

My understanding of this treaty is there are not canadian natives or american natives but north american natives. Since natives wandered back and forth across the prairies, just because the white man decided to carve two countries out of this land does not mean the natives are in two different groups. I believe a native from either side of the border can cross back and forth with out a problem.

Canada does not pay much mind to the Jay Treaty and does not give the right of entry to any US natives unless they are also Status Indians in Canada or otherwise Canadian Citizens.

Daver... I'm about the same. We made the deals... we ought to stand behind them. They have privilege's that no-one other than FN have... I can abide that.
But 'Cousin Bob' from Washington can kick rocks as far as hunting privileges in Canada.
I'm remembering an Inca guide in Cancun stating that most of the indigenous folk in the America's are related... does mean the Inca's can hunt here too?
The Treaties were made, stand behind them. Don't extend the privilege's to Indigenous people from other countries though ... that's disgusting and insulting .
It's like one having permission to hunt from a Landowner... that doesn't mean that your extended family has Carte Blanche rights to hunt as well.

If you had an Inca guide in Cancun either he was really lost or you were

The original Indigenous residents of L'anse aux Meadows drove the Norsemen out dude. Gave them a royal arse kicking over a period of three years, until the vikings pulled up stakes and left. So no, you don't have any Treaty rights, just retreat rights, which really are not much to brag about.

And then the settlers from the UK exterminated to FNs on Newfoundland and even used them as foxes in fox hunts. Whats your point?

Freddy was his name, he claimed to have gone visiting Indigenous folk in Canada... really friendly dude. Full of culture... quite enjoyed it. Very different opinion on whether or not #####s sarcrificed humans or not.
Took us around Chichen Itza... seemed logical.
Why would this be a deal?
I expect folks to debate the post... but I didn't see Freddy as being a big deal LoL

I really don't know how to approach this... But that seems a bit far-fetched. My understanding was they took the services of a much more warlike tribe and paid a bounty on the peaceful tribe heads
That sounds like something out of the history of the world by Mel Brooks when they're shooting skeet... I'm not finding humour in it. I'm saying that's a little bit surreal

Was he a local guide?

No not really. Pre contact only the Beothuk were on the island (MiqMac may or may not have seasonally used the island. Much debate but most evidence points to them not really using it pre contact). Early settlers exterminated them for the most. The bounty was actually put on them by the gov. in an attempt to capture a few of the last ones and save them from extermination.

Fox hunting...?

He was the guy that rode at the front of the bus and kept us in a group... didn't ask where he lived.
Seemed like a fun guy to drink beer with... all I got LoL

Reason I ask is Cancun is home to Maya people. Inca are from S Amaerica. So what is really cool about Chitzen Itza is that more and more is discovered every year. For example they recently uncovered the fact that the grand pyramid actually has 2 other intact pyramids under it. One held a jade jaguar throne. And a cenote under that!! Even cooler is they used to think that CI was built by Mayans ruled by Toltecs as Tula was very similar in construction styles. Recently they have determined that CI PREDATES Tula and Toltec and Maya style buildings in CI were built at the same time. So the whole thing is up in the air. Plus just a few miles North of CI is Ek Balaam which has a whole different style incorporating amazing plaster works.

Lidar has totally reinvented the Mayan world. Basically take every book about the Maya and toss it in the garbage.

Fox hunting...?

So when I was in Grade 7or8 (just turned 48 on the weekend) the whole PC thing was just starting to gain traction. We went on a class trip to a GofC history of Canada travelling symposium. It was in a few trailers that backed together. I grew up in North Battleford which is and was a fairly racially divided town. During the tour the lady talked about the Beothuks and how Euro settlers exterminated them and said that as NFL did not have many foxes the landed gentry would use a beothuk instead. It stayed with me because a kid in our class I will call KB piped up something like "Too bad they did not get here a bit sooner cause they could have foxhunted for months" or something equally horrid along those lines. So I have always retained that nugget because of KBs outburst. BTW KB got a few days off from school and probably strapped for it. Thinking about it KB probably had some form of serious ADD or something. He had zero impulse control.

Maybe he was Mayan... my daughter should roll in soon I'll ask her.
I ain't prejudiced... some folks find this as hard to believe ( My Avatar don't help I suppose... Ol Bob would most definitely have been ), but working overseas cured that. Actually liked the East Indians more than the 'Mericans... after you put your well being in their hands a few times... that 'wrong color' crap gets old.
Same as dating a Cree lady... way cool. Different cultures are pretty interesting. 'Moony Ass' (“Monias”) I was sure they were messing with me, LoL.
But Cousin Eddie from the states has hunting privileges that will far exceed a regular tax paying Canadian's.... sorry man, but my patience and understanding have a limit... like really? You just have to flog that pony to death? Because there is a possible loophole don't mean you have to milk it to death.
Jay's Treaty be damned... only a Judge ( they are a bit removed from regular folk) could possibly come up with that answer.

Exactly man. Nothing like travel to cure thoughts that one people are better than the other. i worked overseas quite a bit too and I know exactly what you mean.

Moonias lol lol, I havn't heard that since I left Sask 30 years ago. Cool.

Only reason I was quizzing about the inca maya thing is I am an amateur scholar of all things Mayan. Absolute obsession and has been for years. Have been to the Yucatan multiple times to look as well as the Mayan Highlands in Belize. Want to go to Guatamala and Honduras to research but a bit sketchy so will have to wait.

A lot of ignorance on this topic. Before you make stupid comments on this ,Please look back in history and understand that Indigenous peoples hunted, fished foraged in these and other areas long before the before the white man came and made borders . How would you feel if someone just came along and told you that, you could not feed your family any longer?

Like it’s going to cause him to starve!! How is it substance hunting when he could buy beef for less than it costs to come up here and kill game. Playing race card and to hell with conservation rules.
