SUREFIRE Optimized Bolt Carrier Group for Direct-Impingement M4/M16/AR-Variant Carbines

Invented by Jim Sullivan, one of the original designers of the M16, the SureFire Optimized Bolt Carrier (OBC) is designed to improve the functionality of an M4/M16/AR variant weapon system during both unsuppressed and suppressed firing. This patented design makes numerous improvements to the standard Mil-Spec full-auto bolt carrier group which allows more time for reliable feeding of ammunition from the magazine, nearly eliminating bolt-over-base malfunctions. The OBC also delays unlocking of the bolt during the firing sequence, which allows expanding gases more time to exit the bore, in turn reducing back-pressure gases exiting the upper receiver group.

Additionally, the neutrally balanced counterweight improves carrier and barrel extension lock-up, nearly eliminating bolt bounce. The OBC also reduces felt recoil, allowing for better tracking of sights and more control of the weapon when firing. Coated with an advanced anti-friction coating, the OBC resists friction during use and makes cleaning easy.

For the ultimate in reliability, choose the SureFire OBC.

Features
-Neutrally balanced counterweight automatically reduces cyclic rate, negating the need for switch or setting adjustments.
-Improved cam path delays unlocking, allowing the chamber pressure to drop another 15% which permits more gasses to exit the bore
-Nearly eliminates bolt bounce
-Long stroke design improves reliability, allowing ammunition more time to feed properly
-Utilizes Mil-Spec bolt and components
-Anti-friction coating resists corrosion and makes cleaning easy
-SF-OBC-556 comes standard with Optimized Bolt Carrier, Long-Stroke Buffer, and Improved Buffer Spring

Neat. Wonder how this compares to the lmt enhanced or kac bcg.

The LMT's only works in the M4 and is plagued with issues, and it was a flop. KAC's BCG is just a regular BCG with a different bolt.

I am not sure how much they can do more with the cam path, there isn't much space to do much more with AR15 bolt carrier. The limitation of AR15 design is always that there is not much space to play with the cam path.

I think this is more of an item for those people who are into suppressors, but for non-suppressed use I am not sure it will do too much for the typical surefire price tag of 400 USD.

Looks cool, when I start to have problems with my AR-15 that I can attribute to poor carrier design I'll buy one of these. Until then it's just for guys who have more money than sense and feel they have to have it simply because the manufacturer says it's better and more reliable. It may actually be better in some way but it's nothing that I've been waiting for to solve my AR problems.

Another solution to a problem that doesn't exist?

I think as greentips siggested this might come in handy for hard suppressor use so useless in canada. Neat to know it exists though.

I'm on the same boat as you. My dd bcg keeps chugging I keep running it.

Very cool.
-Looks like they relieved the rear of the gas key to allow the extra stroke length. (And made a custom length buffer to allow the extra stroke) Adding stroke is something guys with expensive pistols and lots of spending money do to improve the cycle smoothness. I could see it working on the AR.
-They didn't detail the insert in the rear of the BC. Guessing it is more mass, the question is if it has dead-blow mass and if it has any dampening on that mass.
-I know I've seen video interviews with JS in the last few years by TV shows and InRange where he points out that full-auto fire is greatly more controllable with a heavier BC. He is always focused on full-auto controllability.
-Would be nice to see a careful side-by-side photo of the cam track vs a milspec track to see what he did there. Is it the same overall cam length, just with the bolt rotate moved farther forward? Or did he somehow make the length longer?

It looks cool. But not worth $600 and I doubt it offers much over a CC BCG. As greentips mention possibly for a lot of suppressor use. If it doesn’t do that, then what good is it.
