Hello. I'm trying to find a magazine for a 22 autoloader. I cannot find any manufactures name. There is only SURESHOT stamped on top of the barrel. Can anyone please help?

Thanks everyone. Steve.

Do you have a picture available? Snap a photo of the rifle, and one of the mag-well. Sureshot, I believe, was a brand for stores.

Might be a Cooey...heck might be one of a few. Descriptions of mag well would help. Pictures would be best.

I'm curious, as I've only seen bolt action sureshots.

If you're looking at the magazine well, is it shaped like an old key hole? (skeleton key?)

A Savage 59 magazine is not like the current Savage 64 magazine....the current Savage 64 is continued production of the Cooey 64B. Later Lakefield made them...
50+ years production through three different manf.
...if it's a Cooey at all.

Pictures will help.

Here's a shot of an older Cooey 64 converted to use metal magazines...key hole shaped mag well.
(Picture is of a fellow CGN'er...I have permission to use it, but can't recall who to give credit to)

The rifles mag well has no box..just a big gap so you can see the inside of the stock. Kind of odd. Anyway...maybe its missing its mag well....?
Pics to come. Thanks again everybody!

Steve

That looks like a metal mag goes in it. It reminds me of the earlier savage 17 hmr type that ride up the metal bar.The 22 LR ones are different though.

Looks very much like a Cooey 64 that uses a plastic magazine. The plastic magazine has a corresponding groove on it's back half. Hate to seem too fussy...do you have a side view as well? I'm pretty sure it's a Cooey 64 though

Little bit of metal showing looks pretty nice too.

You could try to find a plastic magazine, or convert it to use modern (50 years running) magazines. To convert it:
-Acquire metal mag well (it's a pot metal part, that replaces your current magazine retainer)
-Take down your rifle (in your picture, it's the bigger screw) by removing the stock
(these rifles need to be clean to cycle well so get used to these steps. every 500-1000 rds)
-The takedown screw you removed to remove the stock fits into another screw. This screw holds your barrel retaining clip (and soon to be new mag well) in place. Remove the barrel retaining clip
-remove the 2 screws at the front of your trigger group (these screws will also retain your new magazine well), and the single screw at the back of the trigger group (not nec. if you're adding your new mag well, bet nec. if you're removing the bolt for cleaning)
-Remove your barrel (can be a chore, you can use the bolt to get it moving from the inside) Hold your barrel vertically with one hand, and tap with something nice (I have used hardwood rolling pins, soft mallets, even made a hardwood bushing) around the receiver. Have something soft under your receiver for it to land on. Avoid knocking your rear sights around too
-slide bolt forward, and pull outward/away on charging handle, the charging handle will come out, and the bolt will slide free of the receiver

Clean it all up. Do not lubricate the working parts unless you're trying to prevent rust during storage...run it dry. Also choose a round nosed ammo (I like Fed Champions, CCI Blazers, American Eagle...) you may have to try a few to find one that cycles nice in yours'.

Reassemble using your new magazine well. Kepp in mind the depth of the 2 screws at the front of the trigger group...if they go too deep into the receiver your bolt will bind. They should have lock washers...use them! Prone to getting loose n' lost.

Will try to snap some pictures when I clean mine next time if that will help.

Load it up and enjoy. I've only seen bolt actions marked as Sureshot.

Thanks for the very good instructions on swapping things around! Did you notice that the mag release is on the opposite side? I think this might be an issue.

Cheers. Steve.

As part of the swap, the mag retainer on your rifle will be removed...once you have actually removed your stock, and looked at what you have, you'll see.

The bottom metal may need some reshaping though...get your parts together before affecting any changes though. You can trim to fit.

PLEASE take pictures as you go. Step by step...you may get your own sticky, or at least have something to add to the Cooey makeover thread.

by finding a bottom plate to fit the new magwell, or modifying the plastic mag plate you have, it will fit okay with slight mods. You indeed have an early plastic mag issue. i have a rabbit - stocked plastic mag issue and it is quite an accurate gopher gun. Plastic mags are obsolete and like hens teeth and expensive ( if you can find one). Almost as much as the gun is worth.

Thanks everyone! The input is really appreciated! I was told that the metal mag wells are available through Savage if so and the price is reasonable I'm on my way. Does anyone know?

Cheers all. Steve.

The info you got about cheap thru savage Arms directly is true. I paid about $19.00 for the kit. easy to install too. Google savage Arms for the parts dept number.

you have been getting some excellent advice from some very knowledgeable members about the delightful rifle you have. Just ask and they will help always.
