Hello,

Planning on buying a case of surplus for plinking for a .308 semi. Asking what is a better bang for my buck for a 2-4 moa surplus round between Hirtenberger and XM80?

Sorry if another thread covers it already.

Thanks for your input.

Both are equally good in my xcr-m. Like you said 2-4 moa. The LC brass has a reputation for being good reloading brass. I haven't reloaded any yet, waiting to build up to a 500 pc lot before I do.
I have reloaded the hirt (on 4 times fired). No cracked necks or loose p-pockets... yet.
But if you don't reload then it really doesn't matter as they both shoot the same.
P.S. and if you don't reload.... send me your brass lol!

XM80 will be Lake City brass, better brass in my opinion than the Hirtenberger brass.Bang for buck depends on price you can get them for. I don't get great accuracy from either, but I reload and find 3" groups at 100yds unexciting.

Well brass is a factor seeing as I'm stocking up to start reloading hahaha. Thanks for your input.

I am starting to prepare Hirtenberger (HP) Brass for loading. Like rosconow said, building up a lot. I have loaded Federal XM80 (Lake City) Brass and its excellent quality. Comparing the two, I would have to give the edge to LC, as the flash holes are not as tight as the HP. I will most likely drill out the flash holes to make them the same. I believe a 5/64" drill bit will do the job, but lyman makes a nice tool for it also.

The bigger the flash hole the greater the SD and ES. One reason why Berdan brass shoots well. Small flash holes.

OP, I have both LC and Hirtenberger ammo that I use in three different rifles. The Hirternberger I have was bought close t 15 years ago from a LGS. The LC I picked up from Lever Arms over 25 years ago. I find both to be very accurate in rifles that have excellent bores and decent bedding. One Israeli Mauser shoots it into an inch, off the bench at 100 yds, if I do my part. The T2 Garand I shoot them in only opens up the group by a half inch. The Remington 700 Varmint always shoots them sub moa as does the K98 offhand match rifle.

Both brands don't shoot as well from a BLR or a BBR.

I have reloaded the LC because it has boxer primers. It is heavy brass and maximum loads need to be tailored to your particular rifle. I have reloaded SOME Hirtenberger cases and they are lighter in weight than the LC and they all have Berdan primers. It's not a big deal as I have lots of proper primers on hand but it is a bit more tedious and I use those primers for hard to find cases that I can only get with Berdan primer pockets.

You only mention semi auto. M305???? Some of those are capable of excellent accuracy, most won't give you more than what you're looking for with any ammo, including hand loads.

I believe any Hirtenderger dated after 1980 is boxer primed. They are not all Berdan primed.

I have some 1980 dated Hirtenburger and confirmed it is boxer primed.

Both the LC loaded XM80 and the Hirtenburger have steel penetrators, so keep this in mind if you are shooting steel targets or the like.

Already sold off my M305. This one will be for my BCL102 when it finally comes in. I just want reliability, reloading possibility for plinking and bringing the girlfriend to shoot.

Might even use it in my 700...

I already have match ammo for serious shooting.

From what I'm hearing people tend to lean towards Lake City (at equal price). I imagine performance is similar, excluding personnal rifle preference.
