surplus 7.62x39 storage/transportation

Hi, i'm shopping for some military type ammo cans, any one know off hand what size can would be best for storage, best for transportation, or both? the .30 cal cans look like they'd be easier to carry around. Also with surplus ammo, would it be wise to leave it in the boxes, or is loose storage ok?
 
Metal ammo cans are well known in the surplus business as a money maker. You can find them at any well stocked surplus store. Quality though, varies. Princess Auto will sell you a British Army surplus 7.62 or .50cal can for a goodly price. Periodically they have 20mil or 5.56 link cans. Expect to pay $20 each for starters. Sometimes you will be surprised. They had a batch of WWII style side-hinged cans with wire bales - grossly underpriced for what they were.

I like .50cal cans for storage. When I see them for a good price, I will pick up the 5.56 link (so-called Fat Fifty) cans. A 20mil can is almost too big to be manageable.

NEVER dump ammo out of boxes for storage. The packaging protects the ammo from all its neighbours. The labels and dividers serve a purpose. The only loose ammo I tolerate is bulk reloads where I really don't worry about any kind of sorting or management.
 
I remove my surplus 7.62x39 from the paper wrapping (30+ year old paper falls apart when handling anyway and feel that surplus isnt precision ammo and protection isnt needed). I put about 400rds on stripper clips in a 7.62 can and the rest go loose in a 50cal can. Both cans I put silicon desacants in to keep the moisture of the west coast out. This way I can carry the loaded strippers in a smaller can and dont have to lug the 50cal about
 
ok, well i ordered a 1200 round crate of sellier & bellot surplus, from searching the board, i found that this ammo comes with, not on stripper clips, so a 7.62 can would be good for transporting pre-loaded clips to the range, that way i'm not creating a huge pile of trash at the firing line. roughly how many rounds can be stored in their boxes in a .50 can? this time around i went with 1200 S & B but in the future i may not go with the same brand/count, so would i be better off with 2 .50's and a 7.62 for transport? and where does one find the dessicant for potentially long-term storage?
 
I always order a 1440 surplus crate, as the prices are great. 1x7.62 and 1x.50 cal holds everything (barely). The desiccant I've collected from products that came with it (those little packets you sent supposed to eat). But you can get the silica innards at can-tire (I believe) and make your own. Also Dont throw away your clips, you may miss them later
 
Don't buy the beat up rust bucket ammo cans from Princess Auto. I love the store but their cans are overpriced. CanadaAmmo has brand new cans for the same price or less, they just lack the cachet of having been there done that. The rubber seals are also in new condition. They have .30 cal, .50 cal, Fat Fifties, and 120mm artillery shell cans. Just order along with a gun or case of ammo for free shipping.

ok, so a .50 and a .30 cal (7.62) will definately be enough for 1200 rounds...and in the future i may be looking at 1440...the 1200 was what i could afford for the time being, although i'm spending a few more cents per round, the overall cost was less, but will get me to the range :) I read that the 1200 count S&B comes with 30 loose clips, or something like that...i'll definately hang onto the clips.

noted. thanks for the link...those prices seem to be lower for brand new than some of the surplus cans i was looking at, maybe the "been there, done that" adds value?
 
The amount of crates I had was getting out of hand so I bought a pile of .30 cal cans from CanadaAmmo. Each can will hold 560 loose x39 rounds. 14 cans takes up way less space than the crates. .50 cal is too heavy for me to consider convenient.
 
Canadian Tire sells waterproof storage cans for $15 and they are a hell of a lot nicer, and lighter than old surplus cans.

I put 880 rounds in the bottom section and still had room for more, as well as the removable top shelf, which can store other various ammo boxes.

Also comes with a lock attachment if needed.

I would post a picture but it has a Gun Owners of Canada Sticker on it, and last time I posted it the thread was deleted....

i'm looking at getting another case...i was going to get the $75 norinco SKS deal from marstar just for the heck of it, is there any reason to steer away from chinese surplus ammo?

about the storage case, i just like the metal military ammo cans...maybe i watched too many war movies as a young lad...not looking for something practical, but the most practical in the realm of metal military ammo cans...
 
i use these for any caliber i have a lot of or shot shells because well they take up a lot of room
