Surplus 7.62x54 problems.

You guys overthinking this.

Exactly. As with any rifle in the field just pass a few cleaning/oil patches down the bore and give the rifle a good wipe down before you put it away. If corrosive, take 30 seconds to spill some water down the bore to begin.

I bought a used mini carpet/clothes steamer off Craigslist for not a lot of $$$'s. Using the nozzle I blast (sounds dramatic but isn't) steam down the breach and bore. Remove gas tube (where applicable) do the same and blast through the gas port both ways. The heat that has now been transferred to the parts causes them to dry quite quickly. Then liberal amounts of WD40 ensuring everything is wiped to ensure surface coverage. Bolt and other parts South of the breech are similarly treated. Never had any corrosion problems thankfully.

Doesn't everyone use Aqua Oil? The Brits have used it for over a hundred years. Youngs 303 and water. Only problem is getting the Youngs these days, wish I had the mix.

If you clean it well with HOT water, and oil it afterwards it shouldn't be rusting on you. I wear rubber gloves to protect my hands from the hot water. Use gun oil or Fluid Film to protect the gun, WD40 doesn't do a good enough job for long term protection.

Fluid Film is what I use, and have used for years. Don't seem to have any rust after a good cleaning and a nice sloppy swab of that stuff. Of course, I may not "know what I am talking about". Just my experience. :)

I have seen a few people suggest washing the barrel and such at the range, I prefer not to do this as it's hard to properly dry it out afterwards and under wet or cold conditions cleaning isn't easily done outside.

Since after firing there is salt in the barrel but no water so it shouldn't immediately start rusting (unless you add water) so I expect it takes a little time for moisture to form inside the barrel so the 1-4 hours it takes me to go home and possibly eat dinner shouldn't hurt the rifle...in theory.

I will say, I may add the water pre-clean step before windex as a little extra in the future. As far as I'm concerned the important thing is to thoroughly dry and coat it in WD40 or equivalent and to reapply every 6 months of storage.
