Surplus Irish Body Armour?

You're most welcome! I did forget to add this link regarding the in-house ballistic protection that I mentioned: http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/bot7.htm . Hope you find it interesting!

This one is also an eye-opener: http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/bot16.htm . Blunt force trauma can kill you with a BIG punch -- the bullet/slug doesn't have to go through the armour. Look at the dents in the clay for that reality. Rifle fire? You better have some hard armour over that Level IIIA Kevlar vest!!

Got the vest today! Thanks a bunch. As harbl_the_cat mentioned, the sides are also Level IIIA (not empty nylon material) so you have some wrap around protection for the small calibers. Great fit and excellent condition. What I really like about the plates in these vests are their dimensions: being elongate and not sized as the perfect 10"X12", they cover your spine higher up and the same out front. The recommendation by the renowned Dr Roberts is to position the plates higher to reach the sternal notch in front (to protect the aortal arch). See the bottom diagram: http://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=19910 .

I'm not into looks -- just function. And these puppies do the trick -- at a great price as well.

Joe I am 6'1" 210 LBS and the medium is a comfortable fit, as per other comments if you haven't "filled out yet" or if you are looking to put it on over a winter jacket as opposed to under, then Large would suit you just fine. However if you plan to train with the vest on jogging, running shooting drills ect. the medium will be a better fit and you won't have it bouncing around and giving you rugburn.

On another note If you are planning to put the armour into a molle carrier, I highly reccomend the medium as the plates/soft armour in the large are bigger than those in the medium vests, thus you may have some difficulty finding a carrier which has pockets big enough to hold the large armour.

From my personal experience the Blackhawk Large Carrier perfectly fits me and my size medium plates/soft armour

Joel

I'd suggest a LARGE since you're packing more weight than Joel.

But a few others of the following sizes also squeezed into Mediums:

6'5" + 195lbs
5'11.5" + 196lbs (44" chest)
5'11" + 180lbs
6'1" + 210lbs
5'10" + 190lbs

Anyone with a LARGE vest who'd like to chime in?

I am planning to cut out the plates and put it into a Condor plate carrier. Are the plates the same sizes between the Large versions and Medium versions?

This was covered somewhere in the thread by Joel (and used in my quote from him above) and he stated that the LARGE sizes were indeed larger than the medium (with regard to hard plate dimensions). He used the MEDIUM vest material in a large plate carrier and it fit fine.

So does Large carrier mean the ones that accept 10x12"? Can the Condor MOPC use these plates?

anyone know how's the waterproofing on this vest? considering the weight, running around with one of these on for a few minutes on uneven terrain will probably cause a majority of us to sweat like a pig. that and mud, rain, snow, etc. are these designed to function against the elements?

is #8 a square one? or can you tell me which ones are square?
You were offering free shipping at one point for these. Still the same?

Someone mentioned that the ceramic plates are level 3a. Can anyone confirm that? I think only the kevlar is level 3a but what is the ceramic plate as a standalone?
