Now, which one to choose based on ammo availability and cost? This will be just a CF plinker, not a target rifle, no scopes, it won't be "tac'd" up, not a zombie shooter, just something to hammer away with on cheap surplus ammo.

What is the availability of NATO and Iron Curtain ammo?

Go with the SKS for plinking. Less expensive to buy and feed. Be advised though that American made ammo usually uses a .308" bullet. Warsaw Pact ammo uses a .311" bullet. Even a plinking rifle should be as accurate as possible. The smaller bullet won't be.
You can shoot zombies with it too. Unless your local zombies only come out at night. You'd run into hunting regs issues.

except it seems that all the 7.62X39 is drying up and more won't be imported:( (see ammo forums on surplus importation) I'd go with the m-305, it's a more usefull caliber and a better gun. Still, every one should own at least one sks....

Go with the SKS.
More info and links in the SKS section of this board.

After a year of testing, and practice I have decided that mine is going to be my deer rifle this year.

Some places have dried up, and others I walk in and there are several cases on the floor and the staff don't even know what to price it as as they have no idea what it is. :D

Suffice to say I have just bought reloading dies, and have about 200 rounds of winchester brass saved up, but that's me I'm a belt and suspenders kind of guy. :D

With all the millions of Ak's, SKS, Cz, Rugars, and others rifles in use that eat this stuff I'd be surprised if a North American ammunition producer or importing company didn't jump into this market down the road.

Get both (because they're both fun) :shotgun: and don't worry about the ammo supply. If you see it then buy a bunch. 7.62 Nato and Russian will never run dry. The price may go up and down (but probably up) and availability will be in waves. Almost invariably, where there is demand there is supply. People will always want to make money. Be it from government to a manufacturer to an importer to a retailer.

sorry to side track this for a second, but is the winchester brass made for small rifle primers or is it the feds that are?

i'd vote for an sks provided you bought a case of ammo at the same time.

Yeah, get the M305 first, as it will probably increase in value sooner and faster than a SKS. There is a limited supply of M305's and there have been discussions that Norinco's supply may be coming to an end in the next year or two. How true that is none of us know - but just in case, why wait until prices go up? There is no other semi-auto, in new, unissued condition, with great reliability, and battle proven firearm that you can buy, or ever will be able to buy for the current price of the M305. This is as good as it will ever get for a new semi-auto that use the full power 7.62x51 NATO round. Plus there are ALOT of well designed accesories available for it and great parts availability that will not end in our lifetime.

I think you'll be able to buy an SKS for under $200 for a long time yet. Even if supply dries up, there are so many of them around, prices won't go up much on these. Plus they are not as accurate as an M305, which works in your favour of keeping their price down.

Verdict: Get the M305 now, SKS anytime later. I gaurantee you will be sorry if you don't scoop up a M305 while the getting is good.

Had 'em both for more than a few years and put many, many rounds thru each.

Both are great guns.

To answer your question:

I eventually sold the M305 and kept the SKS.

Better "bush" gun, lighter recoil, cheaper surplus ammo.

If you can afford an extra $190, then just get both. when you can't find NATO 7.62, likely you will be able to get 7.62x39. Plus you have 2 fun rifles for the price of a decent hunting gun.

I should have known; never ask gunnutz which gun to choose. They always say 'get both!!!'
