surplus scopes

If you're thinking "cheap" when you say "surplus" think again.
Original issue scopes are quite dear. And only the Russian ones have affordable replicas from what I know.

The replicas are not bad, and frankly if your looking for a shooter or a rifle to re enact. I would go for them, There are real german scopes that do come up on ebay, but they are not cheap and sometimes not authentic.

There are alternative look-alikes, like this 7/8" Norman-Ford I bought from EBay , at less than a 10th of the cost...the principle outcome is the same (for shooters) .
The Lyman Alaskan is another nice scope and a step closer to the real deal. Both fit nicely on Brit-Canadian and USA rifles.

If you're looking for an absolute original German scope, with all the birds and numbering to go along with it, they're extremely pricey.

On the other hand, if you're just looking to do a buildup sniper, you can quite often find original era scopes for a few hundred dollars. Remembering that the Germans used commercial scopes and, quite often, the only difference between a commercial scope and a military scope is the WaffenAmpts they've stamped on them. If you want to be really picky, do a bit of research and find out which maker was prevalent with which era rifle and which type of mounting system (Hensoldt or Kahles scope on a Mauser production rifle for an early war short rail mount, etc).
