Hey boys,

I got a couple bolt action rifles and I wanted to invest in a semi auto rifle.
I owned them all but for various reasons I had to sell them off.

options that I know of are
SKS
SVT40
Hakim
30cal carbine
Ar15

etc etc........What do you guys think of - Must be CHEAP to buy and I can reload ammo for it. What are the other rifle options?

Also who has the best price on svt's right now?!

Thanks

a good semi rifle is not cheap. one that is cheap to reload for is the ar15 and you can have lots of fun at the range and not empty your wallet.

I have both the SKS and SVT-40. I would say that the SVT-40 would be a good investment if you already own a bolt-action in 7.62x54r, then you could reload for both. The SKS is just a joy to shoot since the surplus ammo is so cheap, but I imagine that reloading will start to come down in price for it as well once all the surplus is gone.

SKS - buy one, buy two, buy ten! They are cheap, abundant, and the ammo is also cheap and abundant.
SVT40 - not as cheap as an SKS (coming back into stock soon around $300.00) and not as abundant, but they shoot 7.62x54r, which if you have brass can be reloaded with x39 bullets.
Hakim - not very common and the ammo is not surplus. Expensive to shoot.
30cal carbine - Almost all M1 Carbines are restricted. Excellent collector gun, but that's about it.
Ar15 - not a milsurp gun yet.

Wrong! haha AG-42s are DIRT CHEAP ($250-$350) and are excellent rifles. MY SVT-40 shoots 4-5inch groups at 100 whle my AG-42 shoots 1-1.5. Light recoil

cyclone, that is funny stuff, I was just researching the rasheed
8K made, forget finding one!

FN49 now that is an idea, EE maybe?

thanks

The Ljungman-platform is intriguing because not only did it "evolve" in terms of calibre, by those who adopted it over time (6.5 for the original users, 8mm for the Hakim and 7.62x39 for the Rasheed), but there were also "tweakings" to the design with each new adopter (the gas-regulator option that many "worked into" the Ljungman was pretty standard in the Hakim).....:)

Anyhow, each of those models might warrant careful consideration of operating the action, as they could give "Garand-thumb" more than a run for its money!.....:D

Nice (G-VG) FN49 in 8mm (Egypt) tend to run around $500, the 7mm (Venezuela) and the 30-06 (Belgian) sell for about the same as an equivalent condition Garand.

Egyptians pop up every now and then, I've seen two 7mm on the EE and one 30-06. The latter two were already SPF (the 30-06 in minutes IIRC) so I have no idea what they went for.

I don't shoot my SVT40 as much since I ran out of surplus - I've tried playing with the gas pressure but it's really hard on the brass.

SKS is my current favorite. Mostly 'cause I'm cheap ;)

You care if it's restricted or not?
"...AR15 - not a milsurp gun yet..." Never was nor will be a milsurp. Commercial sporting rifle.
"...Must be CHEAP to buy..." Other than the SKS, none of 'em are exactly cheap. You can reload for any rifle.

SKS rifles are solid, reliable. As long as there is surpus ammunition, they are inexpensive to shoot. Once it dries up, ammunition costs will be like everything else.
An M-1 rifle would be a sound choice. There may not be cheap ammunition, but .30-06 will always be available, and can be easily handloaded.
