Survival/bush guns?

Hard to pick just one, latley at work we carry a Marlin 30-30. The Enfield we used to carry was not accurate (shot out barrel). And more often than I would like we have bear problems.
 
I also carry a Win 94 in .44 Rem. Mag. mine got the 16 inch barrel and a 2-7x 32mm scope. It's the Wrangler with the large lever loop so even with big gloves you still can work the action fast!
 
I have been trying to come up with an "ultimite" bush gun, survival gun, go everywhere type of rifle. I have tried several different guns and have not been real happy with anything that I had. I am now thinking of building some thing that suits me. I was thinking of a mauser in .308 with as much weight shaved off. Probably a 18 1/2" barrel and a fiberglass stock. I haven't decided on scope or peep sights. Something simple,cheap, and real light and not likely to give any law enforcement types heart failure.

IMO, I think you are right on with what you have posted here.

Can't really go wrong with that. I would mount a low power fixed scope, say 2 power, on it with back up iron sights.
 
...and now for something completely different...

...Heres my survival- general carry gun, and although this looks like a "Zombie hunter" and I'm sure to get comments it is IMO the ultimate survival gun and I can back it up. It started life as an 870 12g. express. It was then painted outside as well as inside the reciever with duracoat making it better at resisting corrosion. I put a Dlask 14" barrel to shorten up the length and make it very portable and easy to carry.A Speedfeed 13" LOP stock followed. I then put a Surefire light on the shotgun and although someone may scoff at this, I can tell you after a sleepless night of being harassed by a black bear a number of years ago I love being able to light up a situation and the Surefire is damned bright. I am able to make hits on a 14" diameter plate at 100 yards with slugs consistently and I feel this would be adequate to take large game if the opportunity arose. In my thinking however, in a "survival" situation you aren't going to be able to devote the time to hunting big-game and you are much better off potting small game, I am good out to 25 yards with #8 shot and I have taken my share of ruffed grouse with this shotgun as well as a squirrel or three. I currently have 12g. flares coming from S.I.R. and will do a test on them and post results in the future, but I think they would be an awesome fire starter! :D
In a survival situation I think a positive mental state is of the utmost importance, and carrying this shotgun gives me IMHO the best versatility, portability and peace of mind. It's a joy to carry, and you'd rarely catch me in the bush without My 870 and my leatherman, except maybe those damned provincial parks :(

...In my travels I have been bothered by black bears,a moose, crows and believe it or not free range cattle. :confused:
...but never coyotes yet.

Have to agree with the Lee Enfield No5 Mk1 Jungle Carbine...pretty much indestructable, cheap, and easy to carry (light).....but a 12ga pump with some 00 buck and some #4 shot in my pack would be a close second.
 
If it came down to one choice, Im going with Sun and Steel. There is something about a 12ga pump that makes you feel safe. Ask any cop. If authority is required, nothin does it like a 12ga. No contest. No matter how big it is it will say ouch and 5 rounds will stop pretty much anything no matter how pissed it is even zombies. Just something so warm and fuzzy cycling a good ol pumper. And yes, they can put meat on the table.
 
I was thinking more about bush guns and not the end of the world survival type stuff. There have been lots of times when I used to do lots of fourwheeling and carried an 870 with the 20" barrel that I wished for a rifle of some sort. I was more interested in do it all type rifles perhaps I sould have labeled the thread differently. The scout rifle is interesting.

...I wasn't offering my build as an "end of the world survival type stuff"
...was just replying to post titled "Bush/Survival gun" which I had interpreted as a firearm to cover all bases and situations in the "bush". Different strokes for different folks :p.

...and now we have broadened the category enormously!!! I have been searching for the elusive "do it all rifle" for years. It's like the search for the grail bro!!
My bank account and my wife are unwilling partners on this journey.
