Fun fact : non of the seeds in this package are available as a GMO so technically it's breaking Canadian advertising law to label this as non GMO .

Corn and Zucchini seed are included in the pack and are potentially GMO crops - how specific is this law?

I was gonna buy wild flower seeds to throw out my window in the spring, but this is better.
Thanks for bringing these in!

I'm curious.... Is this vacuum packed? How do you know they will grow in 20 years ? Other than plant and see that is? Usually frozen seeds are not good for nearly that long. Is the 20 years if they are in a freezer? I could not glean this from trying to read your label picture. I'm not an expert again just curious about the evidence.

Most seeds will stay viable much longer then 20 years if kept dry. The oldest reported viable seed is 38,000 +/- years.

Veggie seeds don't last as long as grass seed though.

Just keep them in a cool dry place like when storing anything for long term and they should be good.
I remember a story (not sure how true it is and it was a couple years back that I heard it) that someone in the middle east or something found seeds that were assumed to be over 1000 years old stored somewhere. They planted some and they grew.
Yes I know that's pretty vague but I'm lazy and don't feel like searching for the story.

I like the idea.

How did they come to the conclusion they would be good to grow in 20 years though? What's the packaging method?

Good question, and I can't answer that! But humidity and light are both factors that seriously impede seed storage, and the mylar packaging protects the seeds from both of these. Heat is the other factor, so refrigerating or freezing the seed packs are ideal and will maximize shelf life.

Since this is both a seed/food product it would fall under the CFIAs Novel foods section . http://www.inspection.gc.ca/food/la...s/eng/1389379565794/1389380926083?chap=3#s2c3 .
Could also fall under competition bureau legislation but the reality of anyone ever complaining is pretty slim.
There is no zucchini approved for sale in Canada that is GMO and I think the only corn is field corn (very different than sweet corn).
It really irks me when the GMO free label is on things that are not likely to have GMOs in the first place. As gun owners we fight against fake labels and claims about us but then we support these kind of misleading claims. Average joe who reads the "non-GMO" label on your veggie seed now thinks all other veggies are GMO and are bad for some reason.

The people who put these kits together for us claim that in the freezer these kits can last 40+ years. These seeds are mylar packed but not vacuum packed.

Thank you so much.

I will buy these for my off grid home. Zombie apocalypse is a stupid fantasy but being able to grow food in times of need is more viable than most think. There is a war coming.

Hi Kate, I got a question. I see that there are two kinds of beans in there, are you able to customize the content of these packages? Also are they dried?

The reason I'm asking is that pulses (dried bean, chickpeas, lentils and peas) are extremely efficient emergency garden builders and offer amazing nutritional variety.

Sorry, I am a farmer and scientist in my day job... Every time I tell someone I run a farm I get asked about the "horrible GMOs" that are "ruining our environment". When companies encourage misinformation and improper labels it leads to a less educated public.

In a survival situation, labels matter! No GMO for me, I'd rather starve to death and to consume that wrongly advertised, GMO ridden thing!
