SUSAT sight?

I saw one in the lower mainland in the early nineties, thought about getting it for my L1A1, but it was about $1,000 then, and it was pretty beaten up.

I never heard anything good about the sight.

Par for the course with the crap rifle it is on top of...$70 million wasted.

Yah I was just curious if anyone had one, personally I haven't read anything good about them.

BTW the Ebay ones are airsoft /gag]. :D

Used one in the mid 80's on an L1A1. It's been many years ago. The reason behind it was to get better aimed shots from the L1. I would argue that the Elcan is it’s off spring. The elcan got armor and bells and whistles but there are ties with the susat sight.

The BA put it on the weapon for the same reason that the CF put theirs on the C7 in the early 90's. The British just saw the need a decade and a half before. Did it do the job? VERY WELL! It is even good in low light condtions. The reason why we never heard any thing good about it is because we never heard any thing bad about it. The susat was used in serveral different countries (by the BA) in different climates and did the job well.

It squeezed the groupings tighter than the iron sites as it was designed to do. It stood up for the 7.62 round without problems too. The newer one on the SA80 is a bit lighter.

Has anyone ever seen a real SUSAT sight for sale in Canada?

Yep, it's in my basement if you want it. Brand new, on a Type 2 SA80 mount (which isn't brand new, but it's in exc. cond). The tritium element is long since dead.

They are ditching it as the Brits are buying ACOG for the SA80A2 from what I heard.

Not in this lifetime. The SUSAT is still made, it's mounted on everything nowadays including the GPMG. They use the ACOG on the SFW, but that's it.

No way is the MoD going to spend £200 million on ACOGs. They refused to buy C7s to replace the SA80 because of the training cost which would have upped the price of the "upgrade" by only a few million.

The Minister of Defence said not long after the A2 upgrade that they would bring forward the replacement for the SA80 to 2010, and that never happened either. I find it very hard to believe they're going to buy £200 million worth of sights for a small arm that is supposed to be replaced in 2020.

If they do buy some it will be limited issue. Remember H&K themselves proposed a replacement sight that was similar to the AUG sight as part of the A2 upgrade and the MoD rejected it.

Never seen one of the SUSAT's in Canada, except on BA rifles....

I have a SUIT sight (Sight Unit Infantry Trilux) that was used on the FN's.

It goes nicely with the Brit L1A1 I have hiding in the safe.

Well, some simple math here: $610 x 200,000 = £62.5 million at the current exchange rate, and I doubt they would replace all the current in use SUSATs anyway.

Gov't pricing...

Same way Colt can sell a M4A1 to the US Gov't at $460 while selling them to civilians at $1250 ina lesser configurations

KAC and Larue both sell their rails to the public at double what they gov't pay.

It is not only a case of it being one price for the Gov't and one price for the normal joe bloke off the street. You also have to take into consideration that most civies don't buy it direct from the manufacturer, they have to go via a dealer. Dealer has to make a profit right, so there is mark up there. Another point to consider is the volume of sales that you are talking about. I don't think there are any private individuals or orginazations that can say "we would like to order 100,000 M4s" other than a gov't.
