I just wanted to give my 02 on the Svt40s in stock at LeverArms. It kind of hurt to pay approx $440 shipped, but I have to say that mine is in good shape. A couple of crossed out numbers due to parts not matching, but the Avt stock I requested is in good shape otherwise.

Might have been worth the $ yet.

And really, that magazine is worth $150 alone, so the gun is justifiable at $290...nothing to complain about here.

Maybe ask yourself what's more important to you; what it's worth or simply enjoying owning one...?

The svt40 is a interesting gun! Not a every day shooter but I will be keeping mine till I no longer am allowed! Back when I bought mine it was 350$, lowest I seen them was 295$ and the selection was.... Meh.....

Im thinking of driving up their this summer and looking through their surplus stuff. I figure I can con some friends on a " road trip " :D

The magazine I got has 2 stamped numbers, and one electrostencil. ...none of these correspond to the number stamped on the receiver. The electrostencil guy tried to cross out the stamped numbers. Looks like it's been refurbed a few times. Also has a Tula star stamped on the sight of my Izveshk rifle. Both the lands and grooves are visible full length of the barrel, so it ain't worn out yet. I havent disassembled anything yet, the gas piston is my only potential worry at this point.

I'm beginning to think the mag is NOT supposed to match.
I have 5 SVT and none of mags match.

What is the opinion of the SVT gurus of a electro penciled mag that matches the rifle with no other markings on the mag. The mag appears to me to be of the original design and making.

I am not a guru, however, I have a mag with multiple stamps, and a mag with only electro stencil. They have identical bodies, but different sliders inside. I'd assume that the makings only happen during re-arsenal, and stamp vs stencil would depend on which arsenal did it.

I doubt that original magazines were ever marked to match the rifle.

Overall summary of my Svt from Lever Arms; it is a shooter that should last for years. It is not a collection piece.

I decided to play with the new rifle and really check it out; so i cocked it, and (i know its not good) pulled the trigger to dry fire it. Nothing. Trigger was limp :p

Complete tear down of this and my other one, compared trigger groups, and everything looked fine. The hammer released fine when it was not in the gun. Long, confusing story made short- the trigger will not release the hammer "out of battery" and the bolt needs to slam forward, not be slid gently. Was worried there for 30 min.

I did notice, along the way, that my Izhevsk rifle has a Tula star on the hammer, when most other trigger parts have the triangle stamp.

I also took a close look at the gas piston, and found that i could turn the gas adjustment screw by hand, much too easily. However, on reassembly, i tightened up the gas piston on the back side, which then tightened up the gas screw as well. Another false alarm. But, the gas tube does not slide over the piston nicely. It scratches inside, and there appears to be some serious burrs on the piston head. It would likely function, so im thinking that sanding the piston smooth may be trying to split hairs here. Would i be doing more harm than good? I have heard that over-gassing is an issue for these rifles, and maybe the increased friction would increase longevity of the rest of the parts...

It could be spare armourer mag (originally not serialized) that was force matched to refurbished rifle. Search here for "SVT-40 spare armorer mag"

I have a svt-38 mag that has 3 different serials on it.
the mags were apparently stamped with the serial and a dash number for the number of the mag issued with the gun (ie. 1234-1, 1234-2)

Is there any chance for more svt 40s to be imported to Canada? Find it weird that just last year I could get them for 300 and now they're almost impossible to find at stores.
