I was wondering if it's easy to remove the plum finish on the bolt of a refurb SVT-40s?

I would like "original specs" on my SVT-40...

I just used that vinegar method.
Plain old white vinegar!
Let it soak for about 10-15 minutes.
Then take it out and scrub lightly with some '0000' steel wool.
Just make sure to rinse off all the vinegar with water. I just dropped the whole assembly into a pan of Ed's Red to displace all the water after :D
I could not believe how well this worked, the bolt looks awesome in the rifle in its original colour.

Two great sites above for more information on variations of the SVT. As far as I know, there are no "Collector" books on these rifles. They are mentioned 2-4 pages in books such as Weaver's "Hitlers Garands" and Senichs "The German Assault Rifles", but I don't know of a written reference purely on these rifles.

The big problem is that most SVT's were hidden behind the iron curtain, except for Finnish captured rifles, which were often mis-matched but at least in their original finish.

If someone had the foresight they should have studied all the RC K98's/refinished SVT's when they first came into the country. There is still quite a bit of information which can be gleamed off these rifles and now that the rifles have spread to the four winds, much of the history has been lost.

If West Rifle ever does import more RC K98's I think I will ask to fly out just to study them (if he doesn't mind).

Damn, that sounds like a wicked idea - I wish I had the time off work to be able to do something like that

Dude, it doesn't take much time. I did mine in a half-hour using a sock, some vinegar, polish and tupperware, I have to do it again to make it really shine but, for a half-hour and a sock that's pretty good.

....

What you do with your sock for half an hour is your business. ;-)

This is a great tip to get rid of that unsightly "plum" colouring.
