SVT-40 buying advice?

I'm very new to Russian rifles and having obtained a very nice example of an SKS, I would like have an SVT-40 as well.
The questions I have are about the quality of refurbs. I would like a matching numbers rifle, but these don't seem to be available as in the case of the SKS.
Anything I should be watching for, or buying tips?

Read through posts here and in the milsurp forum

You won't find a all matching unless its a battle capture bring back or captured by the Finns

The svt40 is usually force matched with electo pencil
If you want a collectible get a 1945 (good luck ) a more available collectible is the Kovrov arsenal
Or just look for a minty svt40 that is on good shape. I have only scratched the surface. If you want to learn more then start reading

Lots of interesting things to learn about different stamps (called cartouches ) and different stocks etc
 
I prefer the look of the svt-40 with the muzzle with the 6 port holes instead of the later 4 port holes.

If you can find the sniper version with the little dint on top of the bolt cover that would be worth a few bucks in the future.
 
My main concern is the quality of the refurbs. I have read that it can vary but I would also assume that most of these guns must come into the country in rather large lots. But such is life when you buy online without seeing the actual gun.
 
We all have refurb SVT's (with the exception of my SVT-38) and there really is nothing to worry about. You will likely have to adjust your gas settings the first time you're out at the range, but as long as you buy one with a nice bore, you shouldn't have any other issues and I wouldn't even say adjusting the gas setting is an "issue"
 
Speaking of nice bores, most of the SVT-40's seem to have frosted bores. I know these rifles never had chrome barrels but is a frosted bore a deal breaker?
I wonder if a dealer would even take the time to clean the cosmoline and have a good look at the bore?

Frosted bore is not an issue as long the rifling is sharp. Light frosted bore is very common in milsurp rifles and doesn't not prevent rifle from shooting accurately.

Just bought mine from Weimajack as well. I like that he hand picks them.....takes the guess work out of mail order for me lol.

For what it's worth, TNT does carry some SVT-40 by the way...I looked. The one I looked at was a medicore quality refurb...think they were asking $325.00 (?) (Darrel may move a little but wouldn't hold my breath too much). I am happier picking mine up from Weimajack...better quality for about the same price shipped.

I may have to go have a look at what he has. Can't hurt to have another!
 
Just put one on hold with Weimajack this afternoon. First time dealing with him, but reputation is stellar. My first SVT has a cut mag and several arsenal repairs to the stock. Avoid any cut magazines! They're ugly as sin. Wolverine has SVTs for $275 right now, but I decided to spend a couple extra bucks for a handpick.
All the ones I've ever seen have dark/frosted bores. Hey they were at Stalingrad, what you gonna do? As long as the riflings strong it should shoot well. Happy shooting!
