Svt-40 clean INSIDE gas piston?

Hi all, I'm cleaning my SVT-40 and there was a bit of rust inside the cup on the outside of gas piston. I inspected the inside of the gas piston and it seems fine but I'm not sure how to get inside of it to truly see or clean? Does removing it allow one to clean inside it?

Any parts that are in contact with corrosive primer residues must be cleaned asap to prevent corrosion. So yes it does.
