SVT-40 Damaged Forend

Just got an SVT-40 in the mail.
The stock has a fairly large crack on the right side forend. It's deep and goes all the way through to the inside where the barrel rests.

Wondering if it's safe to shoot?
No apparent attempt at a previous repair from what I can tell. So how bad would you consider the crack? Is it fixable or should I return her?
 
Shooting it would not concern me, but that crack is not going to get smaller because of it. You might have a compensation fight with the shipper if the seller does not accept the damage is down to him. I would try to get a replacement if possible.
 
I'd return that if possible, unless you've got some type of attachment to it.

You can buy reproduction stocks from ebay for these if the seller is willing to compensate you to cover the expense, but otherwise unless your willing to attempt a repair yourself you'd be better off just getting another one with a better stock.
 
Try to return it and get a new one , looks like there are two cracks , one just bellow the main crack .

Yes they will get larger over time .

You can repair it , if the seller will not make good on a replacement .

Seen worse , here is a 1903 shotgun stock that blew up into 5 pieces on me during a referb .

Since I have virtually no experience/skill working with wood, I have contacted the seller (one of the dealers on this forum) for a return number so that I can exchange the rifle.

Kinda sucks that my first surplus firearm purchase resulted in an instant return, hoping the next one will be better.
 
This is why I don't buy surplus rifles online. I go to a store that has them in stock so I can visually see the gun before I buy it. I made the mistake of ordering my first SKS online and got one with a shot out barrel. Oh well, sold it when the sale prices were gone and up to $200 and actually made a profit of $20 off it then went to a store and looked at all of them.

Until now I was of the opinion that gun enthusiasts had far higher standards than used car dealers.
 
Package arrived in pristine condition so I'm thinking it came from the store/warehouse like that.

The sad part is this came from selecting the Grade One Stock option offered by Wolverine Supplies.

I am pretty sure that came from Wolverine judging by the e-mails that have come in over the weekend.
No worries, it will be dealt with as we always do and a replacement will be sent out.

AR-GUY, that's good to hear.

From what I've read on the forums here Wolverine seems to have a pretty good policy regarding these kinds of things. Guess I get to verify that.
 
Ya some douche bag on here gave me a rifle with the same type of stress cracks and tried to pawn it of mint and un touched...
So I had to turn it into this;

I'd definitely tell them I'm not pleased with it, and return it. Something like that should be disclosed at time of purchase.
