I just purchased a 1940 Tula Svt and took it to the range for the first time yesterday.I was using Russian surplus FMJ and I was experiencing feeding problems with the rounds consistently jamming against the feed ramp. The tips would catch as the rifle cycled.Could this be a magazine problem or is this a issue with the feed ramp.I have heard of people taking a dremel and re-profiling the ramp but I wouldn't want to do that except as a last resort.

SVT feed failure

Magazine fully inserted? Hit the bottom of the mag with your hand to make sure it is fully inserted and locked in place. Then wiggle the magazine and try to pull it out without using the release. If it comes down a bit, or out, the release lever is broken or the spring is weak.

Failure to feed a round or a jam after a round is fired. Adjust the gas system. You will need the proper tool.

Jam when easing the bolt forward? Pull the operating handle back and release it, letting the spring push the bolt forward as designed to do.

Still jamming? Check for bent feed lips on the magazine.

And that would do what to the feed ramp? Are you saying the bolt carrier isn't going back far enough?

nothing to the feed ramp, but mine used to do the same thing and gas adjustment solved it.

If the bolt carrier doesnt cycle all the way back, the next cartridge may pop up out of the mag, but could have pressure on it right away causing it to bind.

As any have said before, 99% of SVT jamming and feeding issues are gas related.
Might as well keep it simple before he goes dremal happy on the ramps.

If that bolt doesn't come from all the way back with enough horsepower, it will jam on the ramp. SVT loading problems = gas adjustment, gas adjustment, and gas adjustment. Did Anyone mention it might be a gas adjustment problem?

LOL

A tip, you might not need the gas adjustment tool, I have a fresh refurb from Badger arms, and I just loosened the gas piston and then I could turn the gas port piece by hand.

It sounds like your svt is acting

like a c7 with a crushed gas tube. bump your gas reg up a bit at at time till it runs well. I never met a russian gun that wouldn't run with a little adjustment.
