SVT-40 feeding issues

Hi. I bought a SVT-40 from SFRC months ago but never got around to shoot it :slap:. Yesterday I made a range trip with her but after I loaded up 5 rounds into the magazine and pulled the bolt carrier, it just went forward a bit.

The tip of the bullet (Russian FMJ light ball) get stuck just under the chamber. With some force I could feed the rifle with 1 round in the mag but it's kind of boring .

I tought about bending the lips a little to slack the pressure on the cases but I fear this could make the problem worse.

Any idea?:shotgun:

It definitely sounds like a magazine issue. Can you post pics? What about getting another mag to try?

Cheers
Jay

I had the same problem, notice how the 7.62x54R ammo has a fat lip at the bottom of the cartridge compared to other common centerfire cartridges?
If they are not correctly loaded in the magazine they will get stuck on each other, you have to load them all from front to back motion instead of just popping them in on top.
Might not be that and you might know already better, but it's worth the look...

Marty, thanks for the help on loading the magazine right. Unfortunatly, it did not help. It almost looks like the tension from the spring is too hard and push the rounds firmly againt the lips causing it to be even hard to unload the rounds by hand. As noted in the OP no problem with one round in the mag; the tip is slightly more in an angle and is directly aligned in the chamber. With 2 or more rounds, the tip is straight forward and hit right under the chamber
.

Here's the pic

Ah my svt still jams on occasion with lead tip bullets. The tip flattens easily, so when bullet is not aligned it will flaten and jam. With my box of 500 mfs lead tip ammo i often had jams. Now with my FMJ czech ammo from sfrc, 0 jams since. I know it's still not normal but since i am no hunter i can easily live with the fact that i have to use FMJ for the rifle to work correctly.

My buddy had the same problem with his SVT. He tried using my mag, and not a problem. I tried his, and sometimes had the same problem as him. Not entirely sure what causes it, but I think his magazine sits a little lower in the rifle, thus the rounds jam. So I would also recommend trying another mag before doing any tinkering with you own.
