Hello everyone,

I have a 1942 SVT40 with a firing pin issue.
The problem is that 4 out of 10 rounds don't fire. It looks as if the firing pin is not coming out far enough to hit the primer. I have tried various different ammo as well I have inspected the pin and spring are not damaged.

Would anyone know what the problem could be?

You either need a new firing pin or you need to turn up the gas settings on your SVT.

The latter may be the cause of the bolt carrier not going far enough back to lock the hammer back. If you hear the click when you press the trigger of the hammer hitting the pin, then this may not be the case, and its most likely the former that needs to be done.

Gas valve setting should be between 1.3 to 1.7. Mine cycles fine when set to 1.3. Also, make sure the metal tab between the gas port on the barrel and the valve isn't sliding around during shooting. I had that issue and it drove me nuts until I spotted it. It shuts your gas system off completely when it's pushed out to the side one way or the other.

I have the same problem, I believe it is just the ammunition (using surplus right?). It would strike the primers hard but only 4 out of 10 would fire (that was shooting surplus ammunition both Czech and Chinese). I then tried some modern manufactured ammo for a buck a round. Worked flawlessly every time. I recommend trying some modern ammo and seeing if that works. If it doesn't then its the firing pin, if it does then its the ammo. Best of luck

Would anyone know what the spec is for the firing pin length? I could remove it to check its length. Maybe it's just worn down or the incorrect one for that model year when they refurbished it in Russia.

Everything said may be true, but have you removed the firing pin and cleaned everything out really well? You'd be surprised what can get in there that can impair function. I've even found pieces of brass inside rifle bolts.

First of all. Inspect the primer after misfire and see if there's a mark from firing pin. Second, as it was asked - do you hear a distinctive "click" when you squeeze the trigger?

Most likely ammo issue.I have 2 SVTs and they both have trouble with some ammo. Especially the Chinese. There is a good stike on the primer but no bang. The Russian ammo is almost always a go. I use the Chinese in my Mosins and It works well. I always take a Mosin when I am shooting an SVT in case this happens. The Mosin will eat it up.

Some require one hell of a good beating with a high grade short punch. Some practically fall out. If it is really hard to get out, polish it befor putting it back in so you won't have the problem again.
