SVT-40 for hunting?

I've used its cousin, the M44 for the past 20 yrs. Everything I fire at lies down for her no problem, so I'd say you're good to go. Expect a hell of a kick though. Cheers.
 
Yes they are loud. But for shooting game not really an issue unless you shoot a lot of game. Actually not that heavy of a gun to tote. My m305 is much heaver. Can be a bit long in tight brush. Mine is plenty accurate 2-3 inch at 100 open sights all day with surplus. A little tough on brass if you reload but commercial soft point is available at gun stores. And the military sights are pretty close out to 300 is all I have tried. Just set it to shoot 2 inch high at 100 and you are good to go out there a bit.. Recoil is very light as most Is taken up by the action. One of my favorite rifles.
Just make sure you have a handle on the gas adjustment system as that could give you a bad day if you have it set wrong or it comes loose and then you will have failure to extract. Not something you want in the field.

The shortened magazine is a benefit for hunting, smaller and less stuff to catch on. I got mine from Westrifle, but other vendors have them as well. Some places have a package deal with MFS soft point ammo. Most SVT-40 have the slots in the receiver for scope mounts, but it still requires another top/rear hole for the Russian type scopes.
