SVT 40 Help ( updated with range report )

Disassembly is a little more difficult than the SKS. I really loved how it shot (just got mine). Definitely had some serious recoil-thought it would be considerably less than the Mosin, but almost identical in felt recoil. I found mine to be an excellent shooter, although I'm only able to shoot 25yds indoors at the moment. Not to hijack this thread but here's an indoor shoot of mine if anyone is interested (posted in Pic/Vid section):

My stock has a serial # printed, no ###'s. Stock/receiver #'s match, magazine has several #'s, non-matching.

He means by drilling and tapping a PU mount to the receiver sidewall. It's doable, but would detract from it as a collectible. If you want to scope oune, best off to look for an ex-sniper and get the proper scope and mount, or at least buy one with rails that could be more easily modified for scope.

Ok, thanks, Claven. I was hoping that it could be done (somehow) without causing any permanent alterations.

The proper sling for your stock is pretty well impossible to find, I'm told. I'd just use a Mosin sling, should be plenty of those around.

The proper sling is made of leather and has the "cog collars" permanently sewn to it. It's the same sling as for the PPSh41. There is also a wartime expedient sling, webbing with the dog collars sewn to it. Many folks just use a mosin sling.

Does anyone have a extra SVT40 sling to sell or were Can I get one besides eBay,,,

I bought mine from Numrich a couple months ago.

Post War, but works well, and yes, a Mosin sling will work just fine, especially if you have the Naval AVT stock.

So the sling that came with mine is probably not the correct issue?

Technically I guess.... but, what is correct??

The Russians would have used pig skin slings, or pieces of cloth ripped off the uniform of a dead soldier to make a sling if they needed to in the first years of Operation Barbarossa... I have 2 of the "no steel hardware" pig/reindeer leather slings... They work, but are also, ugly to the 9th degree....

I am sure that thousands of soldiers used regular Mosin slings on their SVT's and they probably weren't concerned if it was correkt or "alles in ordnung"... :D

It's all about what makes you happy... Personally, I am a stitch nazi, so I prefer the "correkt" hardware and accessories for my rifle, but I digress.... :p

There are some good pictures of slings etc on this page: http://mosinnagant.net/USSR/Svt-Photos85.asp

desert fox how much was shipping ? For that price I will pick one up for sure... Looks to me like a PPSH sling tho... But close enough for now until I find a real one on Gun Broker...

The PPSH sling is very similar to the SVT40 sling, and in fact, they were usually interchanged between the 2 guns. :)

Shipping wasn't too bad, only about $15 - $20 on a $98 order, but they do charge an automatic $25 *export* fee, so your best bet is to make a large enough order to make it worth your while. I purchased a bunch of Springfield 1903 stripper clips, 8mm strippers, FN49 firing pins and springs, and the SVT40 sling to make it worth my while. Your mileage may vary...

An original WW2 one would be nice, but IMHO, I prefer a sling that doesn't cost half the price of the firearm.... ;)

I just found a supplier in the US who seems to have the correct slings, although some are listed as O/S right now. The attached link will take you to the thread:

http://www.gunboards.com/sites/reichoutfitters/index.html

just scan down the page until you find "EAST BLOCK MOSIN NAGANT" and look below for a proper sling.

All the Best,
Frank
