Just got a SVT-40. Pretty good shape except for a significant crack in the stock. I know the SVT-40 is known for having cracks. I've never had a rifle with a crack, can someone please let me know if this is considered "really bad" and how it would affect the 'shootability' of the rifle?

The crack starts from the top of the stock where the back of the receiver meets the wood. The crack is a few inches long (along the long axis). The crack appears to go almost clean through the stock vertically. Sorry i don't have a picture from inside the slot where the receiver sits, but when the stock is removed you can see the crack on the inside and it runs almost the entire height of the stock (ie from the top of the stock almost down to the bottom where the trigger group sits.

Other then this crack the stock is in ok condition, a few scrapes and what looks to be a hairline crack or repair near the magazine.

I don't use google drive, but it is either not for public file sharing on images for this application, or you need to set permissions to public. Entering the URL in your post is prompting a login. Use imageshack or another image sharing site if google drive isn't working for you.

My bad on the images, i had made them public but then resized them because they were too big. Forgot to make the new files public on google docs.
Anyway, moved them over to imageshack because it will be easier.

Open it up a little clean with brake cleaner let dry. Open it up again and put some Zap-A-Gap or similar glue in it. Wrap with surgical tube to close the gap and let dry.

Not familiar with the SVT40 but it would appear someone put in a couple of cross bolts to hold it together.
You could take the bolts out, if possible open the crack, apply some quality wood glue or polyurethane glue, clamp and reinstall the cross bolts. Next I would be looking at bedding the action into the wood to help distribute the recoil forces.
By looking its taken most of the force right there at the top of the wrist. Like driving a screwdriver with a hammer into a block of wood.

Seeing as how there is 2 cross bolts I'd says it was fixed in the arsenal because most have one Or none. But if it makes you feel better you could try getting some glue in there like others suggest.

If its solid then i'm not going to mess with it.
I guess my question was if it was mainly a cosmetic issue or if it would cause a performance issue.

thanks
