Svt-40 into repro sniper.

So I've got this nice little gem with a really nice bore, but I swapped the cracked stock for a near flawless avt stock. It does have to rails for a scope mount but no notch. Do the repro mounts that westrifle and others sell require or fit better if I was to cut a notch into the reciever or are they typically held with screw tension or something?
 
They really do need the notch. But actually work best with a the notch not as wide or deep as an original. You could cut a notch with a dremel tool, or a hand file etc. Of course the purests will cringe at the notion.

Meh I already mis-matched it with the stock swap. Part of the reason I want to sniper it is i think the front sight base is off... I had to drift it quite far to get it zero'd to an acceptable degree.

And purists can spend the money on a real sniper. I'm on an RC COLA budget and this is all I get.

So notching it is!
 
I cut my notch exactly the same size as the cross pin. I used a chainsaw file and it worked perfect.

I also put devcon in the rails to make the mount 100% solid.
 
I here ya. Pretty much where I am at as well. I like the PU scopes. Probably the easiest scope to sight in there is. Fire one shot, then while holding the rifle steady, aim at your original spot, and then adjust elevation to match. Then fire again, and go through the same process for windage. Then a little fine tuning and done.

Or you can get a better mount from Corwin arms while he still has them and not file a notch, plus you get to mount an optic with more magnification than the 3.5 power pu style. I had a 3.5 power on my one svt and it really wasn't enough, even at 100yrds. They are not crazy in price and are easy to remove for cleaning, they hold zero when reinstalled. My safe is at max capacity so I just install it prior to going to the range and leave it off after cleaning.

Lol, Corwin's mount is $118 and westrifle is $268 for just the mount. Save yourself $150 and put that towards better glass.

Besides being the coolest rifle ever made in Russia. It's nice to see Canadian companies offering these mounts. I might have to order one. I haven't shot my svt-40 in a while do the empires go out the side nicely so the scope isn't hit. Also I use corrosive cheap ammo, I guess I would have to zero it in after every cleaning :(

I don't think you will be impressed with a PU scope, I don't think they are much better than irons.
 
True enough, compared to more modern scopes the PU isn't the best, but by WW2 standards it was pretty good. And for the intended purpose, it still is pretty decent.
 
That's why my Nightforce is on my precision rig, the repo scope works the way it was intended to. and makes the SVT more fun to shoot.

It's a 120$ optic when I picked it up last year. So far it's lasted longer than my Vortex... LoL so for the price it's pretty good.
 
I've got a mosin sniper and a svt with a repo pu scope and mount. I find the pu scope more than adequate for 100+ yards. I really like those little scopes on those guns.
