SVT-40 Is it a shooter

From what I've heard there are alot more parts to clean so if you use corrosive clean it very thoroughly and as far as accuracy your comparing 7.62x54r to 7.62x39....the 54r is in the same class as 30-06 to my knowledge and far more accurate than 39 at probably any range. In the end it's apples and oranges. Totally different rifles from totally different times as far as cartridge and firearm designs.
They're good guns. Better than SKS' I'd say.
I never worked on accuracy on either, but found the SVT just felt better. Was heavier, with a more powerful cartridge, but still easier to fire (though norc sks' feel like they were made for midgets to me...)
The SVT will however eat your brass in short order. Shooting reloaded brass in it will reduce it's life rather quickly. Only reason I sold mine was there was something I wanted more at the time.

I got mine from P&S Militaria last year. Great rifle. As has been mentioned here a thousand times before, finding surplus ammo is a real PITA. Not a rifle to choose if you're not rolling your own IMHO. You're in Stettler so Milarm in Edmonton is probably your best bet for bullets.
Compared to an SKS? Flywire has it right. Apples and Oranges. They're Russian and they're auto-loaders. That's about where the similarity ends.
Mine shoots about as well as my Mosin M38. I haven't shot paper yet but water filled milk jugs at around 200m are no problem. Kalinka Optics has the mount and correct bits or P&S will sell you a scope mount with a Weaver rail. If you have the chance to pick out your rifle you're looking for the best bore possible. Use a good bright light and inspect the bore carefully. Don't let a ratty stock scare you away from a nice bore.
Maintenance really isn't that big a deal for either rifle. Make use of GOOGLE or surplusrifle.com for tear down diagrams. The first couple times are a minor pain, but once you've done it a few times a thorough cleaning is just another part of a good day of shooting.
HOWEVER - I don't know how much milsurp experience you have? If this is your first I would recommend maybe one of the nice new Polytech M14 knock-offs. Cost you about the same $$$, they're NEW and factory ammo is easy to come by.
