I'm looking into getting an svt but I don't want to be limited to stripper clips ,have svt mags dried up?, is there after market mags?i can't find much searching google

Excellent idea... getting an SVT-40 that is.

As for extra magazines, despite all SVT-40s being issued with 3 magazines, they are now as hard to find as an honest used car selesman !!!

I have yet to find anywhere online that offers original SVT-40 mags.

As for the replicas, they are not so well built.

I purchased 2 replica mags from Westrifle and the lugs are not well placed at all so the bullets don't feed. :(

I've found up a CGN member in Winnipeg that will reposition the lugs for me as I don't have the metal working skills required.

BTW - Westrifle is not currently offering any SVT-40 mags... or SVT-40s for that matter.

Look, you can do what you want, but here's my take on things:

The SVT is not meant to be reloaded with extra magazines; the magazine is supposed to be removed for cleaning only. The system is not designed around quick magazine changes. As such, if you use your SVT like, say, an AR, you'll be disapointed, and most likely will damage your feed lips in the process.

You say you are looking into getting one; hence, you don't have one yet. Before spending hundreds on mags (and potentially getting disappointed), try reloading the rifle with stripper clips, like it was meant to be. The whole process, especially taking into account our 5 round limit, is even quicker than changing magazines.

I read somewhere that SVT-40s were issued with 3 magazines, as well as a pouch made specifically to carry the 2 extra magazines... does that not argue against the above ??

Corwin Arms sells the SVT-40 mag pouches.

As for reloading, I remove my SVT-40 magazine and load it like I would any other magazine. I have yet to try loading it with stripper clips... like I do with my Mosin Nagant.

Actually no. If the gun was only issued with one magazine ad that mag was lost or damaged (which happens easily in battle conditions) the gun would effectively be reduced to a slow loading single shot gun which essentially put it out of action. One or two spare mags negates the possibility of that happening. Lee Enfields are in the same boat. A soldier might carry one or two spare mags but reloading was principally done with strippers and one mag.

Leisurely removing your mag and reloading it at the firing range is worlds apart from maintaining sustained rapid fire on the battlefield.

Don't make up the stories. Svt was intended to be reloaded with mags and just in case with clips. See user manual paragraphs 140, 165-167.

TradeEx has new manufacture magazines. You'll need to do some fitting to get them to fit/feed properly, but that's fairly typical. The SVT's were made to wide tolerances, and the mags were fit to the rifles.

Horilka and I have tons of SVT's between the two of us. I typically take one or two rifles to the range and EVERY SINGLE MAGAZINE off my other SVT's and swap the mags back and forth. Out of about 15 mags, a couple don't work in certain rifles, but that's to be expected

FIFTEEN MAGS ???

YOU HAVE FIFTEEN SVT-40 MAGS ???

OK, you are officially the god of the SVTs !!!

Can a humble supplicant get a picture of these mythical 15 mags ???

I'd be happy with just 2 extra mags so I can have the same number a Soviet soldier received !!

What does the original soviet doctrine say?

I haven't the foggiest idea. I was originally under the impression that this was a direct translation, but after further review, I am no longer sure that would be a true statement.
Hopefully one of our Russian speaking friends on here can provide us with a translation? :)

Forget about the manual. No one in Soviet army red that stuff. Those that were issued SVTs ditched them the very first chance they got, or traded them for PPSH, PPS or Mosin in the field or used captured MP40s. Those who were mechanically inclined or knew what they were doing would maintain and use them as any other rifle. Doctrine was that not a single shot will be fired without Tovarisch Commisar authorization, disobeying orders will end you up in Shtrafbat and branded as enemy of the state. So there was no Rambo style spray and pray shooting, even in WW2. At the begining of attack each soldier will get 5 may be 10 rounds for his weapon and that's it. What ever happen later if he ran out, his friend Bayo would help.

Above post probably is simplification.
Not all were ditching SVTs. If you do this to the issued weapon Tovarisch Commisar could make a nice hole in your head. Not to mention PPSh, PPS and MP40s are useless unless it's CQB or stormtroops. Not to mention that PPS is 1943 SMG and PPSh was not widely available in 1941. And MP40 was not carried by every German soldier despite the picturesque Soviet movies where every single German soldier was sweeping commies with his MP40. Numerous photographs show that SVT was mostly used as it was intended.

$80 per mag

For that price you might as well buy another SVT.

Ya, I bought a couple SVT's when they were on sale in Vancouver for $200 each, extra mags costing half as much of the rifle I just won't deal with anymore.

Get a great reliable feeding magazine and just get lots of stripper clips, the pouches included with the guns hold strippers perfectly so just go with it.

Why would anyone need 15 mags? This is madness! No! THIS IS CANADA!!!
I buy mine in Walmart.
Counted 22, maybe couple of more lying in the range boxes.
