SVT 40 Magazine question.

Picked up a few boxes from Lever on Saturday.


Two very nice condition SVT-40's. Both Tula's, one a '43 the other a '41 in an AVT stock.


Both were heavily coated with cosmoline and I'd recommend those waiting for the arrival of their new rifles to allow plenty of time to deal with it.

When we went to disassemble the magazines I noticed that mine was closed differently and I wasn't able to open it.

I was able to clean it reasonably well with boiling water but I'd like to be able to open it. There is no hole in the bottom to remove the floor plate, it's held in place by metal tabs that I didn't want to force open in case I can't reclose it. Anyone dealt with this before?
We also discovered that the trigger group was insanely difficult to replace. Fought with it for the better part of an hour before succeeding with double fisted CPR type thumping. Not looking forward to that again. Any way of making this easier?
Very happy with the end result though and both shot beautifully at the range today.

very cool! it does look to be an svt-38 mag. I guess all the parts that were useable during conversion/refurb were just reused. If the mag works in the svt40 I may trade mine for it...

Damn I miss my SVT-40. Not enough to pay 1200+ dollars for one down here tho...

I had to grind a bit off the receiver to get mine to go back on. It wouldn't even "click" without the stock. So much for force matched parts.

The magazine is from a SVT 38. The mag can be disassembled, on the left side, there's a catch that mut be depressed to unlock the floor plate, be sure to have the mag spring under control. Nice SVT you got there:)

I really wish they'd make this a rule, or at least a feature to remove the pictures from quotes.

Try soaking the mags in paint thinner and then spray them out with brake cleaner. Not much in the way of cosmo or any other type of grease that will resist that combo. You could also use lacquer thinner for the primary soak but it is more volatile and the fumes are no fun. It will also dissolve any paint present.
 
As it was correctly assumed your mag is SVT-38, congrats on that, it might be beginning of your hunt for $3k range SVT-38 :) Now back to mag, to have it opened you need to press both side tabs, they hold bottom plate in the body of the mag. Not as easy as on SVT-40, yeah. BTW, I you don't want to mess with it - I can exchange on my regular SVT-40 mag, all shipping is on me. My SVT-38 needs couple of more of those :)
 
Thanks for the offer Horilka but it runs fine in the rifle and after more boiling water treatment I don't see any more cosmo coming out so I think I'll keep it. You may be right about trying to find the rest of an SVT 38 to make it more complete though. :D These things are addictive.
