I'm getting a lot of light firing pin strikes in my svt-40, using several different ammunitions. The gun has been thoroughly cleaned, including disassembly of the bolt. I've read that it could be the hammer spring, would anyone know of a source for a new one? Thanks.

Have you checked the heads pace or your firing pin ie how far it Wil protrude, also have you changed your gas settings? Otherwise the svt you have may just be a picky eater. I have read on the boards many of them prefer dirty surplus.

Also, when the firing pin is in the forward position, with the firing point n spring compressed, the rear of the firing pin actually goes into the back of the bolt, past flush. Is the normal?

Hmmm. I usually have heavy primer strikes with mine. It likes to puncture the primer of new manufacture commercial ammo (some of that fancy new stuff they are making for hunting that has brass cases, non-corrosive and softpoints), but works fine with surplus.

If you have another SVT or knows someone who has one, you could try another firing pin. Yours could be slightly worn and thus not getting solid strike. Another thing is that it could be slightly bent and rubbing on the inside of the bolt, I was having this problem but as soon as i straightened the firing pin slightly everything started working fine.

Funny coincidence, I had my SVT-40 out to the range this morning and I had two "light" primer strikes out of 80 rounds. For me it seemed to be linked to the gas setting being a bit low and not fully cycling the action. Once I dialed it up a bit (my SVT-40 doesn't cycle reliable until 1.5-1.7 which aggravates me to no end) I didn't have any more light primer strikes.

Of course, like the others have said, could also be a firing pin issue.

Depending on the rifle it could just be the ammo as well. With mine it didn't work with 3 types of surplus, and only like one of the ones I tried. It functions perfectly with newly manufactured ammo. Some of the surplus out there has really hard primers, and the SVT-40 is a picky rifle (one of the noted issues with fielding it was ensuring it had ammo it liked). Give your rifle a shot with new ammo if you haven't and if it still doesn't work it is the rifle not the ammo.

So maybe having a higher gas setting may help the hammer to reset a little better? Sort of sounds like a long shot to me, but I'll definitely try that.

Both mine hate Chinese surplus. Never a missfire on eastern block stuff. I either just fire again or use in my Mosins.

this problem has nothing to do with gas settings, firing pins or springs. It is all in the hammer. If you want to fix this issue get a heavier hammer. It was addressed with wider trigger guard and heavier hammers in late war production svt's.
How do I know this? well I lived through this with one of my svt's and when I swapped trigger group from other rifle, problem went away.
Its good to have few examples to play with.
