I just got an svt 40 through trade. This is my first, and after trying to disassemble it, I'm having issues with the trigger plunger. I can get the cover to rotate to the 9 o'clock position, however the plunger won't push in to release the trigger group.

Another question. This is all matching except the magazine. It's an AVT stock, no refurb repairs or strike throughough's and the serial matches the rifle. The safety only flips to the left side(semi auto) and not the right(auto) does this mean this was an AVT? it seems used as there is notches in the stock behind the trigger, and the bolt is blued, not plum.

Have you tried using the bullet end of a round to push on the middle of the plunger? Or using the gas piston? I've had success with both these ways to push in the plunger when it is sticky. Is there some cosmoline or something still in it maybe? Some brake cleaner / heat may help as well for first disassembly. The receivers and such seem to be built nice and tough so being a little rough with the SVT shouldn't be a problem! (Just don't reef too much on the stock maybe)

As for the stock I think many stocks were made for the AVT models but that one was a little hairy and they put them on the standard ones instead. Someone can probably chime in with a more detailed reason. Mine also has the AVT style stock with the two cut outs.

Have fun with her!

The trigger guard latch plunger is a sleeve that moves within the opening that you see when you open the little gate. Squirt a little lube in there and hold a pin punch or screw driver against just the sleeve and tap gently. The trigger group can be a pain to reinstall. I carved a groove in a piece of 2x4 the width of the trigger guard that I can double hand slam it with.

AVT stock doesn't mean it was a AVT. After the war a fair bit of SVT-40s were restocked with AVT stocks (mine is in a AVT stock as well, stock is dated 1944, rifle is dated 1941). So no need to worry about it being a prohib or anything.

nonrandomH: I use a brass drift all the time to release the trigger group if they're at all sticky. Handy things to have around. If you have trouble re-installing the group a rubber mallet will help. I have so many of these thinbgs now it's ridiculous- great rifle!

Here is a handy video. Just don't use his method of holding the guide rod and spring in with his thumb when he removes the receiver cover. That is just a good way to have the spring and rods take a rapid trip across the room. The point of a cartridge is meant to go in the divot at the end of the rod, with the base of it braced against the back of the receiver. Then it is all held in place as neat as can be while you remove the cover.

Oh yeah, and the point of a cartridge is also used to depress the button that releases the barrel band.

Yep I tried that. That's actually the video I was using. No dice. I'll try again in a few minutes with lube and force. That always works..... Right?

That's more or less what I did the first time...Use the punch that came with the rifle and hammered away...I wouldn't recommend that though, bent the hell out of my punch :(
They can be pretty sticky though.
