SVT 40 Not Cycling

Hi SVT Ghurus I picked up one recently , which seems to have an issue the thing wont cycle and the rounds have grouves or lines in the neck
which appears to be gripping the empty in the chamber . now I did happen to pop into visit a gunsmith on the way back from range
and he popped a cope down it , and there appears to be grouves cut into the throat ?
my original though was the rifling somehow went a little deep . but I had a look see with scope and definatly only cut in that area the rifling
itself is quite shallow by comparison .
Ideas advice to get this old ruski working ?

What type of ammo are you using?

SVT 40 has a fluted chamber, the marks on the case necks are normal. Adjust the gas setting for extraction and ejection. If your gunsmith does not know that he is not a gunsmith.

Adjust your gas setting, you are likely set too low for proper cycling.

I was having the same issues and my gas setting was 1.3, I didn't have a tool so used a 4mm bit and turned it to 1.5 and now its perfect...my rifle doesn't like PRC ammo(wont shoot at all) so make sure you test different ammo in your gun before buying an 880 round case like I did

Yup, fluted chamber, all is normal.

As Olympia said, check your gas valve - if it's at 1.3, make sure it's lined up EXACTLY ON THE MARK. Even a small misalignment can choke off the system. It should still cycle at 1.3 though - might be time to disassemble the valve and give it a good cleaning.

If it cycles, but not so well, try it at 1.5 - a little more oomph behind the system can make all the difference.

thank for the replies guys , ill try adjusting the gas . it didn't seem to have enough oomph to pull the casing out . I used Russian milsurp ammo with it .

Its funny I hear a lot of people say that their svt's hate PRC ammo yet Tradex sells a svt rifle with a case of PRC. I wonder if they get a lot of complaints about the guns not functioning properly

In case you were unaware the fluting is to aid extraction.

Yeah its definitely a gas setting issue. Make sure its lined up perfectly on the setting you settle on using. My two svt's like running at 1.3 and 1.5.

Also you could check the gas piston and see if its pitted and loose in the gas cup.

My SVT didnt like the Chinese stuff. I had the same issue with it. I adjusted gas settings from 1.3 to 1.5, used czech ammo, and it is purring like a kitten now.

Your russian ammo should be fine.

yep russian ammo run very fine in mine i can run it a 1 and it cycle and accuracy seem to be good ( im still poor with that rifle !)

Mine are usually set at 1.3 or 1.5 - I'd say all of them are but I have four now that I haven't even fired
