Hello recently purchased an SVT 40. I was wondering if anybody knows of anyone who is making a scope mount for this rifle that doesn't require the "sniper notch" on top of the reciever as mine doesn't have one. I have the two rails/slots on either sides of the reciever but no notch. This means I can't use the original scope mount right?? Your help in incresing the enjoyment of my shooting and the lightening of my wallet is greatly appreciated.

In fact you could put a repro sniper mount, you could drill and tap a hole each sides of the mount to secure it to the rifle with set screws. I read about guys doing that because they didnt want to alter the rifle itself but ofc using a repro mount mean using a repro scope aswell but its doable, not really at low cost.....

Hi Thnx for the info svt1940. Whether the mount is a reproduction or historically accurate doesn't really matter to me. I would just like to add some cheap "modern" optics to the rifle once i get comfortable with the iron sights. I once saw a mount that fit in to the dovetails on the back of the reciever but had a picatinny rail on top. This would be what I am looking for. Has anyone else seen this mount anywhere or was i just dreaming?

Krzieg your links don't work.... and you couldn't hit the broadside of a red barn if you were standing next to it:stirthepot2: JK

A repo scope mount will only fit a sniper model SVT "with grooves and notch" if there are grooves but no notch, then no repo mount will fit :(

With a file, it's very easy to made a notch to accomodate a repro scope mount.

No problem at all.

Anyone have pics of what this notch looks like, or can describe where it is? I know what the rails look like, on the reciever on either side of the dust cover.

From russian guns.ru web site:

They assured that all measurements were taken from original sniper SVTs.

Yes the mount you talking about was made in Canada but not available anymore.

Repro mount will fit, drilling and tapping a hole on each side then using set screws to lock the mount in place. Somes on gunboard forum have done this way, ofc making a notch is not that hard but personally i wouldnt make it on a standard SVT, i prefer buying a ex-sniper with the notch.

Great, thanks! I thought only the two rails on either side of the dust cover was all that's to it, guess I was wrong lol

The mounts slop back and forth in those notches. There is a reason why the Russians gave up on the SVT40 as a sniper rifle.

They are at their best as an iron sight rifle. They are actually a pretty nice rifle.

I tried about 4 different mounts and wasn't happy with any of them.

There's no way to clean the rifle without removing the mount and they are not very secure, at all.
