SVT 40 Stock Crack

Good evening Comrads,

I have an SVT 40 rifle that I purchased from Lever Arms last year. I have never fired it. The stock of the rifle has several repairs, but my concern is with a crack at the wrist of the stock. If you take a look at these pictures, you can see the crack extends down from a repair beside the receiver. Would the arsenal have addressed it when doing the larger repair? Can I shoot this and not worry about the crack getting bigger or should I start looking for a used stock? I'd like to get some opinions on this.
 
I wouldnt worry too much about it. I would shoot it and check if it became worst with time.Beside what you have to loose, if it does became worst then you could check for a replacement stock or try to repair it now. There is probably a video on Youtube showing how to do it.
 
Fisherman24: A great many refurbs have stocks with a crack in that area. They often have one or two bolts inserted there to stabilize them. The rifle shown had two installed (prior to its use in refurb) to deal with a nasty crack and I've shot it a lot with no problem. Maybe, because your crack was partially dealt with through the large glued in patch, they felt a pin unnecessary. If your crack grows there are fasteners available at the hardware store that resemble what the Soviet's used.

If your stock is properly shimmed a hair crack shouldn’t be going anywhere. Loose action screws/bad stock fit is usually responsible for cracks at the wrist.
 
I would suggest using a Chicago screw if you are really worried about it. Hardware stores will have them or could order you in one. If its a shooter grade it wont devalue it much if anything at all
 
Is harder to tell is this a crack or a stock repair that is a little more obvious? It looks like a stock repair with a seam to me without a closer multi-angle look.


One issue I have with my SVT40'S is that they take some abuse from the PRC surplus that I have. Two of my SVT40'S developed small cracks in the top cover wood after shooting this despite have no issues with commercial ammo. The surplus does shoot hotter with more recoil on my Mosins as well. My solutuon so far was a foam shim to buffer the slight movement of the top cover.
