SVT-40 to SVD Dragunov Build

I think that your your rifle looks kickass. please ignore those that cried about you modding a milsurp.

This one I don't care about because he made it into a firearm that is interesting and can not be purchased in Canada.

Now the other thread where a guy wanted to duracoat his entire SVT-40 black, wood and all... not so much.

tractor parts

LOL the OP shouldn't expect universal praise. When I see the desecration of any historical object it's sad. This isn't an online circle-jerk, it's a forum where opinions can be shared. If you can't deal with it, that's your own issue.

Hi REMF, I work with a corrections officer from Bosnia, fought in that war, His opinion of old Soviet guns , is you coudn,t buy a beer or breakfast with a truckload of them. He assures me there are still warehouses full of them. Quit whinning, I want to see how this man,s project turns out

Any progress? I'm curious if the gun will feed from the mags with a correct magwell made for them. I could be wrong, but I remember the SVT magwell being smaller than the PSL/Dragunov mags...

is anybody making a shell deflector rig for the svt or something that would fit on it with a bit of mod...

:D

I do have to admit though: I'm kind of sad to see the stripper clip guide ground off and the bolt handle modified (I think the original charging handle is more comfortable), but if you can make a good shooting rifle even better and easier to scope, then go for it.

I would have liked to save the guide as well but it wouldn't fit under the dust cover:(

That said the parts I was waiting on to be able to determine a critical dimension came in so now its off to work and start cutting:cheers: The plan is to get started this week if the work bomb doesn't drop.

incorrigible any update?

Found some pics may be its useful along with your imagination you can create something out of it.

These are not my pics but someone posted before I think these belong to two different members here:

That last one looks like the love child of an mp-40 and an ak :p

Any updates?

Yup. Sorry for the delay, busy at work, sun was in my eyes, yadda yadda:D

First chance for a 'me' day for the last several weeks was today and I turned off the cell and made some head way. Before finalizing the reciever there are several 'issues' that required solving.

The project had been stalled as I couldn't get the fk'n slot pin that holds the flash hider on out. It wouldn't move with a 5 lb sledge( my knee moved though when I missed and it took a half swing b: ) I finally got is out after trying several tools and then finally just end up making
the one I needed out of some spare steel I had on hand to make the reciever shroud.

Once the front sight was off I removed the existing flash hider in prep for the new one and the rear heat shroud extensions as they will not be needed anymore

The trigger was fitted so that it would still work with the safety. Now its just a matter of tack welding it into place when I get access to a MIG at work.

I didn't know just how the rear handguard stopper was going to be placed until I could get the frick'n front sight off.

It looks like it will be too big so I'll have to figure a way to size it to fit. It showed that the rear sight will have to be attached differently as it will have to be raised and moved forward to clear the rear stopper and the front sight to match. That should be just a matter of welding in a couple of spacers.

With the rear handguard stopper location now known I am able to find how the top cover will be set. There is a small steel tube that lines up fairly well with the SVT trigger release mechanism. A little grinding to shorten it up and now the top cover location is set.

Getting the mags to fit is kind of a PITA. There so close, just far enough out of spec to make it difficult. Ask 10 guys and you'd likely get 10 solutions but mine was to grind out some of the mag well and take down some of the mag itself. The result is that it fits, functions with the bolt but I'm not going to check to see if it feeds until its a little more together... just in case

 G:

Making the rear stock was another PITA as I'm as much a carpenter as I am a smith or metal worker :dancingbanana::dancingbanana::dancingbanana:
I found a nice lad in saskatchwan to provide me with good undyed laminate and was able to whittle away with a sander until its gotten pretty close. I figure it'll be Super Spar varnish to match the front... and may a finish coat with some iodine mixed in to give it a red tinge. The stipes on the under lying board is a result of me experimenting with colour on birch plywood.

The rear site and front gas adjustment are highlighted with red to standout a bit.

So as of tonight this is where it sits... never fast enough but it is coming along. There's tons of stuff I've missed documenting but suffice it to say it all takes time... the devils in the details.

What really takes the time is just ruminating and trying to come up with a way of doing way I want to do with the limited resources and tools I have. Its not like I have a machine shop to use and both of the gunsmiths I knew around here closed up shop. Given some time I think I'll try to take a stab at the reciever shroud next weekend... if work cooperates.:D

Looking good - I'm curious does the dust cover on the top of the receiver fit into the back of the handguard stopper on the original SVDs, or does it fit into the receiver?

Also, if the rear sight were at the right height, would cutting the rear handguard stopper to accomodate it work?

(I realise that the rear sight is too low for the handguard itself, but I'm weighing the odds of making a very close to accurate "no gunsmithing" version of what you're doing by only altering parts that can be swapped out, rather than doing any cutting or alterations to the metal. I would obviously need to fabricate parts instead of using SVD parts like you do, but it might allow me to make a lookalike without permanently altering the gun itself. Similar to Kasat's in the "no alterations" method, but closer to yours in attention to detail in copying.)

Not sure. I've never seen a real SVD:( . I've had an offer from a good guy on the Wet Coast who has access to one that offered to take pics if I needed(an unsolicited and very nice offer I might add :) ) I can ask and see if he'd be willing to take a detail picture of that area for reference. It does fit nicely though.

Not by using the SVD stoppers as they force the handguard higher than the rear sight can accomodate. However before I sourced the SVD stoppers I found a guy in the states who makes an option to change a PSL to a SVD (Dragunov) and bought a set as I didn't have the option I do now (see pic).

They allow you to do just what you are thinking without a cutting the SVT, although it would have to be trimmed to fit the SVT. It was the best option until I went this route. Not convinced I made the right choice, but the choice was made and there's no turning back now:p.
