SVT-40 to SVD Dragunov Build

You'd have to be a much better hack than I to start playing with gas placement, alignment, repositioning, filling in the old without disturbing the bore, etc.

It was something I entertained originally, it just way out of my league skill wise.

Might be an option for a good smith when I get things all wrapped up. Just got a layoff after 6 yrs so it would seem I have a bit of time on my hands in the short term;)

the things youv done on that thing is pro. i was thinking if you shove a bullet in the barrel till it reaches the gas hole and welding the hole but keep the barrel coo

OMG amazing build .... wow it is a dang shame that some one has not come up with a commercial stock or replacement for the SVT similar to the sks want'ta be ones. But Yours is a work of art ... I am totaled by it cheers times ten

This is mine, do I have to notch the furniture to add a bipod, I don't see a relief.

Well, I hope they re-hire you, or you find a better job soon.

You're right on track with the iodine mixture for the stock colour, as the Soviets (you probably already know this) used iodine to tint/colour their wood.

Amazing build! I personally love what you did with it! like others here i would like to order a kit from you! I totally lack the skills...

keep up the fantastic work!

^^ I could be wrong, but I'm sure that getting the rimmed Russian cartridge case alone to fit the bolt will be enough of a headache to deal with, let alone having to change the mag, gas port, etc.

Ever since I did some dremel damage to the original butt stock I knew I was going to have to replace it eventually:bangHead:

I guesstimated the dimensions based on pics I was able to download but I now believe the first version was taller and thinner than they should have been, as well as missing some key features. Here's a pic of the old version that had suffered being refinished a few times to find the correct colour... you can see the finishing damage I did trying to working in the trigger guard with the dremel quite literally minutes before I finished it originally:bangHead:

I learned quite a bit on the first attempt and then incorporated into this 2nd version a sheet metal butt plate, a pistol grip cap carved from a bakelight ashtray and some detail where the stock meets the reciever shroud. I think it's a better representation and seeing as they're a PITA to make I think this will be the last one for a while...

The colour from the red garnet shellac made for a better colour match as well as seen installed...

Just a bit more work on the front sight and it'll be done for a while.

Kind words... tough to do commercially as I've found many of the parts extremely difficult to source. Some I've only come across once in a couple years like the dust cover. Some never and had to be fabbed, for instance I've never been able to source the flash hider/front sight assembly been looking for the proper piece and this one is 'close enough' by using a FH from and FN-C1, and eventually an older model AK-47 front sight.

Still haven't been able to find a good older AK front sight yet though (have an AKM, but it's just not quite right). You'd think they'd be everywhere but no luck so far... no one that will export to Canada anyway:mad: Stay the course and keeping my eyes open and it'll happen eventually;)
