Now that I have the trigger group out of the rifle (Thanks to you CGN'rs) how come it is so hard to push back into place? I know I was doing it right (Put the front of the trigger group in first at an angle so that the studs go into their respective slots, and than lowering the group down onto the release spring) but I couldn't get the locking lugs (Two rounded 'hook' like lugs that hook each other locking the group into place) to lock onto each other. No matter how hard I pushed or leaned into it, I couldn't get the group back in and locked. In the end (GOD forgive me I knew not what else to do at sea!!!!) I put it into a vice (GOD help me, I really didn't want to!) and SLOWLY, ever so slowly cranked it until it locked into place. After I took it out of the vice I inspected the rifle and there was no damage whatsoever. I was so lucky!
I know that has GOT TO BE a better way of doing it, but I don't know how. Please help me so I don't have to do it that way again.

I don't know exactly how the trigger group of the SVT is built but if it is like the SKS, you MUST engage the safety before attempting to put it back on the rifle.
Another thing: usually it is preferable to have the carrier and breech block out of the action when remounting the trigger group.
And never force anything; your use of the vise may have damaged something that you'll discover later.
Good luck!
