Howdy SVT-40 owners !!

So far I've taken my SVT-40 completely apart twice...

Once to remove the grease it was packed in when I received it from Lever Arms in December 2013 and once to clean it after I finally got it out to the range on February 8, 2014.

I found the videos below quite instructive.

However, I ran into problems both times I attempted to reassemble the trigger pack or group. Despite having the little gate at the rear of the receiver at the 9 o’clock position, it is very difficult for me to click the trigger pack into place. The first time my son (who is built like a Russian ox) had to squeeze with all his might and, the second time, I used a wooden dowel and a wooden mallet to gently but firmly “persuade” the trigger pack to click into place.

I know there is a small spring in the stock that helps the trigger pack pop out once the catch is depressed so I’m wondering if this spring needs to be shortened ??

Any advice, comments, etc. are welcome.

Cheers !!

Assemble the tg and rifle without the stock and check to see if the TG is jamed hard into the reciever. A too tight stock fit is almost unheard of.

OK, I thought about that and will definitely check it next time I need to clean the rifle... which should be next Monday after I go to the range with my son so we can do a little tandem SVT-40 shooting !!!

The strange thing is that my son's SVT-40 has the same issue.

They are both 1943 Tulas with AVT stocks.

Cheers !!

He-he. Every 6th or 7th rifle has this issue. Put in upside down on hard surface with some carpet or hard rubber mat. Insert TG at the front side, make sure you did it right. Hold the rifle firmly down with left hand, then slam guard with open right palm (thumb area) really hard . After 3-4 times you will be able to handle any soviet ww2 weapon, even PPSh. Just don't afraid to break it, it's much stronger than your hand :)

What is 2x4 guys? Some tool? During the war (and reenactment) stuck Mosin os SVT bolt can be opened with no tools. Here's original soviet recipe: make her stand on the ground on the stock barrel looking up. For MN make sure you turned bolt so its handle looks up. Hold the rifle in your right hand vertically. Then just kick the bolt down with your right foot (I hope you wear some military boots). Worked like a charm and very authentic :) Just make sure barrel keeps looking up during the kick - away from your head.

Heh, that's a good technique.

On a Mosin, beating a stuck bolt loose with chunk of 2x4 is considered the appropriate method in a lot of circles.

With an SVT, getting the trigger group back in place after cleaning it would probably fall into the same category. Mine isn't that stiff, but does require a good palm smack with a bit of enthusiasm behind it.
