SVT-40 vs Mosin Nagant Recoil/Which to purchase?

I thought I heard that the Bolt actions were simpler and more accurate. Nobody has explained why they are more accurate. I'm still very new to rifles.

The SVT is going to be a better bet if you are recoil sensitive. Between the large gas system and massive muzzle brake, you can pretty much let a toddler shoot your SVT40. I hated cleaning mine, though.

Even if the Tokarev require a bit more work for cleaning compared to a sks or a mosin, you get used to it very fast. A bolt action Moisin is more accurate because of the solid lock up the bolt provide but also because a Tokarev have many moving parts, and manufacture tolerances vary too because the rifle was kinda expensive and complicated to make during wartime. All said, the SVT is a very potent and interesting rifle, no milsurp collection cant live without 1:)

Well, I just got my own Mosin. I found the recoil to be not that bad. BUT!... You do want to ensure that the butt plate is well placed to the shoulder for maximum contact area or yeah, it'll leave you grimacing after a bunch of rounds. But it's no worse than a .308 bolt action. To compare it I'd say that it's a little more than a target load from a 12Ga pump but no where near as hard hitting as a slug from the same 12Ga. It's a bit more stout than a .30-30 from a lever gun but not by much. So this puts it as less kick than many of the classic hunting loads shot today.

As for all day comfort I'm planning on getting one of the slip and lace on recoil pads in the sleeve so I can shoot comfortably in a shirt for the summer. Remember that in the military the soldiers would be wearing battle dress of some form which would have acted as padding. So "wussing out" by using a slip on recoil pad isn't as much of a cheat as it would be otherwise... :D

I wussed out and ordered one of these.

Roza would be ashamed of me.

Mosin nagant M91/30 all the way! http://youtu.be/od9nhgzT9QI
I RO at my local shooting range all I can say for the SVT is it is a headache for most of the shooter who come and go compared to the M91/30 there is no comparison that is why the russians dropped the production of the svt the mosin was first desinged in 1891 and is still in use in iraq against our troops, that should tell you something right there! start putting custom ammo through it and you will be suprised try some .311 174 gr BT HP sierras!.

I don't think you own an SVT, do you Shaun. The SVT was too complicated for the uneducated Russian troops. Why did the Germans covet the ones they captured? Enough to the point that they made their own Geman manual!!!
The SVT is one sweet lookin, bad ass, semi-auto.
Unless it's too complicated for you. Just joking Shaunman. I love em both. The Mosin not too much right now. It just cost me a new RCBS kit and brass, etc.. to make it shoot straight. God bless it.

The Tokarev was a very good rifle despite fews weaks points. The russians dropped the production mainly because it was difficult to manufacture in wartime and required more time to make than a mosin. The russian needed guns and they needed them quick. The average soldiers didnt have proper training to use the SVT efficently but the sniper(even if the accuracy at long range suffered) and the elite troops made very good use of it not to forget the german and the finns. Tokarev is not so complicated, its a very well balanced rifle, accurate and with proper care, reliable. I love my mosins but still prefer the SVT.

They don't make recoil pads for these? Some say the recoil is close, others say the SVT is much tamer. What kind of shape do each usually come in? Factory refurbished? When I took apart my Tula SKS refurb for the first time I was surprised to find that every single part looked brand new, except for a few flaws on the wood stock. Then again, it was my first rifle that I've owned.

Which is easier to dissassemble and clean? I'm assuming there is clean/corrosive ammo choices too or is it not as readily available as 7.62x39? Thanks for the info so far.

My SKS recoil pad perfectly fits my SVT-40 with AVT-40 stock (Lots of SVT's have AVT stocks).

Get an SVT. Mosin's were cheaply mass produced when WWII broke out. SVT's were the best of the best Russia had and they are full of history and a semi rare, amazing badass rifle.
