What can be said about the SVT-40 ?
How about weight , accuracy , ...avg. price ?
Would the SVT-40 be good as a hunting rifle , where accuracy is very important ?

The stock doesn't seem very sturdy compared to other battle rifles. You are also kind of limited with regards to ammo because there aren't that many varieties of 7.62x54R out there. Accuracy is so-so, but if you're going to use it, you'd better be good with iron sights, because scoping it isn't easy.

Its light for a full power battle rifle, if the barrels good it's as accurate as any rifle of the era (they scoped some and used them as sniper weapons, mine shoots pretty well even with a rough bore) The stock will crack at the wrist easily, but as you probably won't be butt-stroking any germans, that won't be an issue. I think they're a lot of fun to shoot. Price seems to hover around 400, I found a bubba'd one globe brought in with a rough barrel and consider it a deal at 200.

Any rifle you own is a good one, right?

It's fun to shoot at the range, it's got mild recoil and my particular gun is pretty accurate. PITA to take down and clean, but once you are used to it it's fairly straightforward. I love mine, but second the opinion about iron sights.

Can anyone post a picture comparing the early svt bolt covers that were tapped for scopes and the later untapped ones?

I thought the scope base was always a dovetail (or swallowtail) into the back end of the receiver and down the sides.

As for carrying one, the SVT is about 4' long and not well balanced for handling in the woods. It was OK for collective farm conscripts on the bald Russian steppes when the alternative was just as long, but then designers learned more.

My SVT shoots vertical strings because the metal guards on the front end are not held solidly by the bands. Just another piece of faulty engineering they had to work through to get better.

I look forward to buy one in the future. Meanwhile, I would like to share these pictures with you all.

The one above is actually for sale right now, but the price is so steep, that it will be there for a long time. The guy is probably simply using it as a cheap way to get clicks.

Thx for the info fellas , I really appreciate it .
I recently had a revolving gunrack made for my Enfields and now I have this huuuuge gap in the guncabinet .
I've been kicking the thought of a AG42 , then on PS militaria I seen the adds for the SVT40 and it kinda did something for me .

I don't know about others, but my SVT40 chews up the brass pretty darned good. So much so that I don't think its worth reloading. But otherwise I have found mine to be suprisingly accurate, but like the SKS, some are some aren't.

I run only surplus through my SVT-40, the neck on the brass is collasped, ruined. I run the good stuff through the Nagants!

I can't complain about damage to the shell done during chambering and extraction, but it sometimes drops the shell right into the action and dents it pretty badly. Kind of like in the picture on surplusrifle.com, where a shell sits across the action. Sometimes mine is stuck along the action and the mouth gets dented. This applies to steel case. Have not tried brass ammo in SVT yet.

If you set your gas regulator up a notch you should get rid of the extraction/ejection issues. Mine throws brass about 20 feet.

i love my svt40, very accurate, i dont mind its length, but then again im fairly tall. I think the svt40 has good balance, nice kick and i have never had feeding issues etc. heck, i dont even find it loud. i guess it depends where you shoot it.

maybe i just got lucky, but my svt is opposite of all negative comments made previously. i feel sepcial now. :p

btw, mine sits at 1.3, try to adjust yours to fix the ejection problem.

don't get me wrong, I love my SVT, the only little issue is it eats the brass. Speaking of adjusting the gas regulator, is there a special tool for it, or what does everyone use?
