Aside from P&S, are there any sponsors or other Canadian dealers that have SVT-40's with the notch for a scope mount?

I'd love to have a scope mounted on one, even if it's just a reproduction. From what I've read, any of the other mounts for modern scopes either don't hold a zero very well or require bubbaing the rifle. I even contemplated taking a die-grinder to the back of mine for a minute before to add a notch, but I quickly realized I was an idiot for even considering butchering it.

I've had 2 SVT's with the factory notch.

I tried 3 or 4 different repro SVT scope mounts. None were satisfactory.

They slide fore and aft on the grooves. It doesn't matter how snugly the mount fits the grooves, they still move. There is a housing on the rear of the mount that has a spring and plunger in it that bear on the receiver. As the mount moves fore, the spring pushes it back aft.

I tried one of those square mounts Frontier was selling. Even clamped down so tightly the bolts squeaked, the mount moved forward with each shot, until after about 10 or so rounds, the bolt carrier handle starts hitting the mount. :bangHead:

On the SVT, not only does the scope mount move fore and aft, so does the action move fore and aft in the stock.

There's quite a bit of rubber chicken happening while you are firing such a rig...

A proper scope mount is drilled and tapped or solidly mounted to the receiver in one way or another. No can do on the SVT.

Every time you clean an SVT the mount has to come off. Good luck with a repeatable zero.

If there was ever a rifle that was made for iron sights, that is it.

Alot of the SVT's ordered into the country can be ordered by the dealer with the scope mount reciever as part of the refurbished rifle. I have two and both have the scope type recievers and both were bring backs, one being A Finish capture, making them both originals not refurbished. I wouldn't touch them, but if you could find an extra cover somewhere, I would play with it to see what you could mount. They are so much fun to shoot with open sights, I would love to try them with a nice scope. If you do mount a scope, let us know how it went.

Well I got mine from Marstar I'm sure I you specify to them that you want one with the grooves I'm sure they would be more then happy to pic one out for you

I think a couple of you are thinking of the grooves on the sides of the earlier receiver. The sniper rifles also have a notch at the rear top for a cross pin.

Question- Why did the Soviets phase out the grooves in later production?

One more ease in production and as stated above they were not useful as a sniper because they would lose their zero to easily. Also they favored the mosin nagant sniper cause it's just that cool. Lol

just ordered a repro scope and mount for the svt 40 ,so what i read here the thing is useless if it dosent hold zero .There must be some way to secure the mount so it dose hold,i saw the slow motion video of the svt being fired that makes me wonder ,the rifle has quite a lot of movement wonder how you could hit anything with it anyway

Got a link to that video?

Hey, they are a pretty good iron sight rifle.

I took 3 of my six SVT 40's out to the range yesterday and one had an after market scope I got in a trade. After about a box of of twenty rounds, I gave up trying to zero it. The thing sucked. Went with iron sights on a 1943 Naval AVT stock and if you want to see the kind of destruction that caused (I brought cantelope, tomatoes, watermelons, bricks and cinder blocks to the range) I'm going to be uploading the footage on youtube soon. Just look for my vids with my user name. When you say you wonder how anyone could hit anything, you'll see I have very few misses - they're wickedly fun rifles.

Go to youtube and type in

"SVT 40 vs FRUIT, Cinder Blocks and Bricks, Baby!"

Enjoy

i have two svt 40 havent fired either of them yet,was going to scope one of them ,didnt really want to cut the notch in the rear of the reciver but may have to p&s has only one left and the bore is questionable on that one .I seem to remember a detailed drawing on here some time back on the exact diminsions for this notch ,dose anyone have the link just in case

Yeah, iron sights is where it's at. Sorry about the vid, guys - if you saw it with no sound before I deleted it, it will return, with the same title, as soon as I transcode it through Nero and see if I can get the video AND audio going again

Oh Noes!

All the youngins will be throwing away their "Enemy at the Gates" videos along with the sniper notch SVT40's, Scope and Mount! :D

The Bragging Rights on the EE will still say "It was Stalins personal Rifle, it has the rare, scarce, unobtainable, sniper notch on the SVT40" but won't mention it can't hit the side of the Barn at 20 paces!:D
