What is the size of the hex nut to adjust the SVT 40 gas system?

I noticed that the gas setting is slightly out of alignment on my rifle and cycling has become inconsistent.

Yes - I understand you can use pliers, but need to be careful not to mar the nut.

Finding the correct SVT tool as proven harder than expected - any suggestions?

Codfan: While I do have the special tool (and I don't think it conforms to a standard hex nut?) I find myself often just removing the gas piston which can be done with a small crescent wrench or open ended wrench. On most you can then turn the plug with pliers or fingers after which you just thread the piston back on. If the plug is tight tap it through with a drift, clean it up and reinstall.

Thanks and Yes its tight alright. Just was not sure how much force was acceptable.
 
All done. Process took about 10 minutes (below is the "before picture" - just slightly out of alignment).

This included the time to clean out the gas port.

Knowing that I could apply some gentle persuasion definitely helped.

I do intend to pick up the correct tool for the range.

I am using MFS ammo which does run a little dirty.

Just a word of caution about the gas regulator:

Don't superman tighten the gas piston into the gas block with the tool or you will not be able to turn the penta nut with the tool, and will most likely round off the corners. See lots that look like that at the range!

FWIW, I keep the gas system free of oil (I degrease with 99% Isopropanol rubbing alcohol or vodka if I'm feeling nostalgic), save for a tiny drop of oil on the last couple piston threads before reassembly. If find that keeping the gas system dry makes clean up after shooting surplus corrosive ammo much easier as your not dealing with a black oily mess.

corwin-arms, SFRC/TheAmmoSource, P&S Guns and Militaria, all carry the tool. Corwin also carries the proper mag pouch (as opposed to the Mosin ammo pouch that everyone seems to like shipping with the SVT).
 
Tried finding the tool on-line, best I found was $29.99. Not to bad, but then the postage was $21.
Decided to cheap out and made my own, got an old 1/4" socket and filled it with JB weld I already had laying around. Pushed the gas plug into the soft JB weld and pulled it out, left it on 1 side to dry. Works great for a home made tool.
