I have never owned a SVT specifically, but the first things I would check with an old surplus rifle is to make sure the whole gas system/internals is clean of cosmoline and the chamber is rigourously cleaned of buildup. Some semi auto rifles have an adjustable gas system, does the SVT have one adjusted wrong?
Is the ammo poor quality? Is the magazine damaged?
I would wager it is something basic like this.

90% of the SVT problems are solved with the gas adjustment. If you don't have the gas adjusting tool, get one. I went through this learning curve last summer. If you find ammo you like, have, or can readily get, then you don't have much adjusting to do once its set. If you change ammo, you may have more adjusting to do.

I chewed up a few rounds ( ok, lots) when I first shot the thing, but its good now. The brass looks like it gets eaten up, if you're using brass rather than surplus, but it reloads fine as long as there is no damage to the neck. The Russian surplus works and shoots better than the Czeck surplus.

I've only shot 3 different SVT-40s, and they all drive tacks. Very nice, very accurate as far as open sights can be.

Hi. What kind of jams? Feeding jams are usually mag related. Extraction jams can be the ammo or the gas system. Ejection can be the ammo or the ejector itself.
As mentioned, start with a really good bath.
Good info, including stripping your rifle, can be had here. The 'Range Report' tells how to adjust the gas system. http://www.surplusrifle.com/svt40/index.asp
P&S Militaria is listing a reproduction gas tool for $25Cdn.

Good to know. I had similar problems with an SVT. The SVT would feed, fire but the bolt would not eject the round (gas problem). I would then need to manually open the bolt and use the cleaning rod to eject the brass.

Do I have similar problems? Is there something else I should do?

Thank you

If you had to eject the brass with the cleaning rod, your chamber could be dirty(case stick in) or the extractor could be worn or dirty but i would think more of a dirty chamber. In that case a good scrub with a bronze rush will usually cure the problem. if rust is present, penetrating oil should be used than after brush and clean and cleaning the extractor as well. I still never have any malfunction with mine, gas set to 1.5 work flawlessly all year long, any weather.
