SVT Noob Ammo+ questions

Hi All,

Whats the best place to grab the gas-tool, and non-corrosive ammo? Waiting on a Weimerjack and looking at 7.62 x 54 and I've seen grain sizes from 147 to 200+, 147 seems to the surplus and therefore I have reasoned it to be most appropriate for my new baby but most non-corrosive seems to be a higher grain count.

To adjust the gas setting and to disassemble the gas system for cleaning. The gas system can be tuned for different loads.
 
It seems most SVT operators are using corrosive.... I was going to use the Non-corrosive to start as it seems the SVT is no SKS in terms of easily breaking it down to clean and I feel it was a good idea as my learning curve develops....

My brother has an SVT and it's super picky about what it cycles. We think its the gas system but who knows. The chech stuff cycles well though. As far as a gas tool if there's a gun show anytime soon you can probably get one there. I think they're mostly the same price everywhere. Or see if you can get a deal on one when you buy the SVT.
 
Hey, I had an SVT 40 that I just sold. It was actually quite easy to strip once you did it once or twice. I thougt that it was like the SKS in that it was cheap and so was the ammo. The first couple of times I shot it I used commercial ammo. It had quite a bit of recoil and had cycling issues. It basicsally operated as a single shot rifle. To solve the cycling issue I ordered a tool from Blackriver Gunsmithing in the US. If I recall correctly, it was around 17 bucks shipped and solved my problem. You coulkd just use a wrench, but I didn't want to mark the outside of such a nice looking rifle. I also switched to surplus ammo at that time. This stuff was dirty. Way worse than anything I have ever shot through my sks. I wasn't too concerned because the barrel was a little rough to begin with and this it was it was designed to shoot. I also clesned it after sooting. I know at Relaible Gun in Vancouver they had surplus corrosive as well as surplus non corrosive. I am not sure if they ship because I am local and just drive over. I prefer the ligher grains of the surplus ammo, especially for doing any large amount of shooting. I shouldn't have sold her! Hope it helps.
