For those following SVT prices, the latest Switzer auction was interesting. 11 SVT 40's sold at an average $740.00 (including auction fee but not including tax/ shipping). The range was $690.00 to $920.00. They were all basic refurbs and the higher prices, based on a quick scan, went to ones with Podolsk receivers. These numbers seem quite a bit higher than prices on CGN EE but not quite as high as the most recent prices at commercial sellers. Bottom line- if you're looking for an SVT 40, the EE here is the place to look with the added plus of being able to ask questions directly of the seller who will likely have a track record on the forum. But keep in mind, bore condition, stock condition, ect, with these refurbs is all over the page. Lowest possible price should never be the main consideration, ask for bore photos, sample targets, etc, and get yourself a good one.

Practise taking your SVT40 down and cleaning it. Literally German and Russin soldiers broke them down and cleaned them in bombed out holes. Sure we can do it on a bench at home or at the range. Carry a small rubber mallet and some brass punches and your set to service many firearms at the range. Everything on the SVT 40 can be broken down without tools and the front band with a rubber mallet if it's a tight one. Corrosive ammo should be no issue with your SVT40 as it breaks down easier and less thumb straining than your SKS.

SVT40 if not banned by the Libs will be a $1500 in 2 yrs you watch.
Lots of 500rds of Barnaul 7.62x54r kn FMJand SP are still fairly reasonably priced compared to similar 308 and 223 . I recommend getting 500rds of 7.62x54r SP while you can. I chopped a big tree down with 6 rounds of barnaul with an SVT40 it would be an awesome moose , elk or caribou round. I wouldn't bother with the minuscule savings on the FMJ in comparison.

What is driving the price up like that though? They're not getting more rare, as the same number of them in canada is pretty much the same. I doubt they are being destroyed, decompose, break at any significant rate also...

I dont mind anything I have to go up in value, but it's interesting to know 'why' ;)

My guesses: 1. Incredibly badass futuristic look with that perforated barrel cover, muzzle brake and big magazine.
2. Genuine historic military rifle at 1/3 the price of the Garand, which I would prefer to have, but can't justify at the price.

Personally I would say they were underpriced by some of the commercial sellers after the latest round of importation. Remember the Lever Arms $200 Christmas Special? Makes you wonder what the importers were paying per pound. The supply is now fixed (and there will be some attrition). The secondary market has bumped prices up to what they now appear to be but I'm not optimistic that they'll keep climbing at that kind of rate. In any case, great rifles and pure fun at the range- even better if you have one that will group decently.

It's hard to compare the two I find.. they're just soooo different in the way they behave. The SVT is also loud as fk when firing in a covered location :)

I would find it very difficult to only keep one of them. If 54r ammo was impossible to find, I think I'd keep the SVT and hang it on the wall (bolt removed of course).

Now, if only non-corrosive 54r ammo was more price friendly... I'd bring my SVT-M to the range more frequently.

I've been reloading the surplus 7.62x54r ammo for years, just reuse the bullets and powder in PRVI reloadable brass, really cuts down on
cleaning and just as accurate.

"Boomer tax", aka "I know whadda gawt".

In other words, supply/demand. Thankfully I got two at $300 each. They don't see much range time though, as surplus ammo is kinda junky, and reloading for them is next to pointless.

I know reloading can keep costs down, non-corrosive, etc, etc. I've even thought of rechambering mine to shoot 308... I still don't know if feasible/$$ that would be though. ;)

Edit: oh, I'm also lazy... so I don't reload.
